asciilifeform: meanwhile, in comedic lulz: (warning: raw spamola!) : a romanian whorehouse-themed linkfarm hotlinks asciilifeform's photo of timis water tower ruin .

asciilifeform: say what one likes about mp, but he didn't hotlink!111
shinohai: Yeah the appropriate moniker would be "romanian whorehouse-themed blog"
shinohai doesn't want readers to misinterpret, likes whorehouses.
asciilifeform: the funny bit, shinohai , asciilifeform gets ro spamola. possibly on account of this, or because linked at one time from mp's, or whoknows. nao if could redeem 9000 cutouts of this spamola for new passport!1111
shinohai: I could see asciilifeform setting up shop in that tower with a death ray or somesuch.
asciilifeform: was my 1st thought when was there, lol. but prolly the austrians own it. (or mp even.)

verisimilitude: One of the nicer qualities of Emacs is how everything's modifiable while using it. This also means it can never maintain invariants properly, however.
verisimilitude: I suppose it's a fact that any sufficiently introspectable system will suffer in this way.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: in principle, there are pills against this. see also. i.e. equiv. of iron 'undo' button.
verisimilitude: I agree, and think of the seven laws often, but it's clear to me there needs to be some base of the system, not necessarily hardware, which tells the user ``No, I won't be modified.'' and which would require rebooting to do so, were it truly wanted.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: there's precedent -- consider the 'recover bios' jumper featured on many mb's from past ~decade (connects spare rom w/ factory-supplied stub bios to 'unbrick' from botched reflash)
verisimilitude: Also, I see these selection links require JavaScript.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: they in fact do
asciilifeform: to date nobody's come up w/ a 100% server-end variant of it that worx w/ ALL possible page contents (e.g. mp's only worked w/ plain text and over 1 para. at a time iirc)
verisimilitude: I've given thought, asciilifeform, to how I'd implement an interrupting button.
verisimilitude: Having a single, fixed option is perhaps nice, but ultimately unacceptable.
verisimilitude: However, making it modifiable allows a program to spin around and change it so many times per second it can't be used.
verisimilitude: One option is having a fixed button and a customizable button, but perhaps the best solution is forcing all such customizing through an interactive program, meaning it can't be changed so.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: you may find it interesting that high-end pc mb's already include a 'nmi pin'. normally not connected to any buttons, but in principle could set up handler for it during bios init, in smm ram, and use similarly to the iron debugger in e.g. bk0010.
verisimilitude: Mine idea was to just have the mechanism at the lowest level of the operating system. The prime loop would have a ``check input against this'' check.
asciilifeform: imho nmi-attached 'button' debugger really oughta live in a (socketed) rom.
verisimilitude: Well, ROM is just another way of saying ``No, I won't be modified.'' anyway.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: mno, there's 'over 9000' ways of 'saying'. but exactly 1 of making it stick.
