whaack: asciilifeform: i'm also considering buying some external ssds, do you have any recommendations?
asciilifeform: whaack: at this pt all the samsungs in asciilifeform's torture room are '270' series. they seem to have similar wear characteristics, but very slightly faster i/o
asciilifeform: whaack: avoid 'qvo' lineup tho, those are the 'starvation' variant which burn ~2x as fast
asciilifeform: re: vendors other than samsung -- have 1 machine w/ a toshiba, circa '17, still alive (tho very light on writes on acct of what runs there; yer mileage may vary)
asciilifeform: the dc dulaps all run on 860s; to date none have needed replacement.
asciilifeform: asciilifeform's dc trb noad, an 'apu1', also on 860 (the 'm2' compact variant), ~2.5y of service, disk aint dead yet.

billymg: ^ i had the bulk of that article sitting around for almost two weeks, been busy with irl projects (completely rewired the entire property, all new cables, conduits, breakers. also now split into 5 meters, up from the previous 2, which, based on how they meter here, should save about 30% on the monthly bill)
billymg: whaack: for an external ssd just take the same samsung 870 and put it in an external enclosure
billymg: they're usually like $20 or so on amazon
billymg: re: the totally-not-an-inside-fed-job bitfinex hack, i saw somewhere that they're not even going to charge them with the actual theft (because obviously wouldn't want that to be under any form of scrutiny), only the money laundering and "conspiracy to defraud the usg"
asciilifeform: billymg: unsurprise, lol. there's exactly 1 'authorized thief' in the reich.
whaack: lol i bet if they're going to do any payout to the bagholders it will be USD at the price of the coin when it was stolen
asciilifeform: a la mtgox aha
whaack: asciilifeform: i thought the mtgox people got a flat 0
asciilifeform: some handful supposedly 'paid'
billymg: i think most of it was already paid back, back in 2016
billymg: not in btc of course, in some other token bitfinex created for the purpose
billymg: i.e. "here's a stack of chips on the house, don't forget to tip your dealre"
billymg: dealer*
PeterL: billymg: in the "PHP 5.6 and Apache 2.4" section, s/enale/enable
billymg: PeterL: ty, fixed
billymg: i'm amused at the irony of the USG charging these two with "money laundering" when in fact it was the feds that stole it, and are now, six years, later laundering it themselves through the this fake "bust"
billymg: "six years later,"*
billymg: yup
billymg: ah, apparently even with their casino chips only refunded 36% of the loss: https://coinidol.com/bitfinex-reimburses-hacked-customers-in-full/
billymg: my guess is along with some agreement that if you cash in your 36% chips you sign away any later claims to compensation for your loss
mats: iirc the mtgox claims are denominated in btc and have been on the verge of resolution for months
mats: some percentage of those coins will definitely flow into exchanges as people get their coins back and go into fiat or diversify into alts https://blog.wizsec.jp/2021/02/mtgox-claim-calculator.html
mats: “The trustee also reserved a buffer of what bankruptcy creditors would have received for their crypto claims (50,058.12 JPY per BTC) by selling a portion of MtGox's remaining bitcoins in order to guard against a possible future drop in market value. The estate currently holds 141,686 BTC and 142,846 BCH, plus about 68 billion JPY worth of fiat.”
mats: it’s weird to call the bitfinex hack an inside fed job, I haven’t read any evidence of it being either an inside job or fed involvement
asciilifeform: mats: our null hypotheses differ.
dulapbot: Logged on 2022-02-08 13:53:38 asciilifeform: i.e. usg's indictments have approx. same relationship to fact as freisler's.
mats: it should cause a nice dip when mtgox claimants get paid and they sell some percentage to exchanges for fiat and diversification into alts
mats: supply has been very tight and that will probably continue into the future
asciilifeform: esp. the 'claimants' who are actually reich sockpuppets.
mats: I don’t see how anyone benefits from trying to dump coins via waterfall in the current day
asciilifeform: mats: srsly? don't see why reich absolutely must prevent runaway 'moon' ?
mats: You might wipe out a bunch of leveraged positions but there’s no assurance you’ll end up with more fiat or btc at end of play
asciilifeform: the folx printing printolade aint out to 'end up with moar fiat or btc'
mats: You might ensure some other participants end up with bags of your money though
mats: Who will probably put it back into bitcoins
mats: It might cause more volatility but naively it’s hard for me to come to the conclusion it all nets out to suppression of the price
mats: People with low time preference and no margin come out ahead
billymg: http://logs.bitdash.io/asciilifeform/2022-02-11#1078750 lol, where would you expect to read about it? cnn?

asciilifeform: ah lol there it is
PeterL: hmm, scoopbot gone again?
asciilifeform: mno,falsealarm
PeterL: asciilifeform: "rather than one of the many vile agglomerations of faecal droppings from anonymous vermin typically met with in public digital cesspools." << this phrase does not seem to keep the same academic, fact-based tone as the rest of the document?
asciilifeform: PeterL: intentional.
PeterL: nice concise explanation of what v is
asciilifeform: PeterL et al feel free to come up w/ own variant, asciilifeform aint attempting to be 'god emperor' or to force anyone to use subj. as given.
asciilifeform: + IANAL. anybody deluded enuff to contemplate attempting enforcement of this or any other 'software license', in whatever shithole, will have to fork over own dough and get it massaged.
whaack: asciilifeform: ah ok, i spent a couple mins scratching my head looking for the 270 series
asciilifeform: whaack: my apologies. 870.
thimbronion: asciilifeform: consider calling it the GFY license
asciilifeform: thimbronion: wassat?
asciilifeform: thimbronion: that'd be moar appropriate re: the old one, neh
thimbronion: asciilifeform: not seeing a link to the old one there
asciilifeform: the 1 devised by mp
thimbronion: asciilifeform: definitely an appropriate title in that case
asciilifeform: thimbronion: 'VPL' aint a variant of subj. i rec to read the article, it aint long.
thimbronion: asciilifeform: I read. Still seems like a troll.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: can't resist to ask wai
asciilifeform: imho no moar of a trolol than e.g. gpl.
asciilifeform intends to 'relicense' e.g. ffa under 'vpl' upon next vpatch to same.
thimbronion: asciilifeform: I guess because legally minded folks might take it seriously
asciilifeform: even better.
asciilifeform: is entirely intended to be taken seriously. while same people who pissed on the earlier mpistic 1 will of course piss equally.
asciilifeform: the linked txt factually reflects what e.g. asciilifeform wishes people to do with his softs.
asciilifeform: and quite deliberately prohibits e.g. throwing onto shithub and similar idiocy.
asciilifeform: ( a hypothetical shithub which only accepts signed commits and spits'em out on demand as a vtree would be kosher per vpl. afaik dun exist tho )
asciilifeform: vpl is erry bit a serious reaction to the idiocy of gpl as the latter was to microshit's.
asciilifeform: asciilifeform is wholly uninterested in being a contributor to the fungal mass of open sores as exemplified by gpl et al.
asciilifeform: 100% willing to collaborate with human beings, rather than fungi, and these asciilifeform defines principally by a willingness to uphold the cause of the human against the fungal; and not the least important aspect of this is vtronic publication.
thimbronion: Should I publish a genesis of the version of python I'm using for blatta?
asciilifeform: thimbronion: iirc signpost is working on this
asciilifeform: thimbronion: if yer asking whether this is demanded by 'vpl' -- it aint, if you read carefully
thimbronion: asciilifeform: wasn't wrt to the license
asciilifeform: but yes, at some pt ideally we'll have a vtree of literally errything one might care to stuff into a newly-powered box.
thimbronion: 2.7 is already "unsupported"
thimbronion: I will likely soon need to host it.
thimbronion: For those not on cuntoo
asciilifeform: the only practical solution to the fungal 'obsoletion' is to host it all. and eventually, yes, in vtree.
asciilifeform has a long-term aim of baking sumthing in which can rewrite e.g. 'v.py', logotron, etc. and say goodbye to pythonism
asciilifeform: the latter's a rather horrendous kludge if you think about it.
asciilifeform: python even in its heyday was nearly just as much of a carcinoma as perl in '90s.
asciilifeform: wb crtdaydreams

verisimilitude: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-2-11#1078798 This didn't occur to me, but I also don't find it worth explicitly stating in the text.
dulapbot: Logged on 2022-02-11 18:42:10 asciilifeform: and quite deliberately prohibits e.g. throwing onto shithub and similar idiocy.
verisimilitude: Behold, these researchers have invented both APL and functional programming as described by John Backus.
verisimilitude: I like how they use the word ``tensor'' instead of simply ``array''. Too many people nowadays know what arrays are, so using that word would be a problem.
verisimilitude: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/trilema/2017-08-15#1698508 I'm fairly certain every unary function can be optimized like this, it doesn't matter whether it be array reversal or anything else.
dulapbot: (trilema) 2017-08-15 asciilifeform: by not actually doing the flip-whole-thing bit
crtdaydreams: verisimilitude: aren't tensors differing from arrays in rank? i.e. a tensor is a rank > 3 array?
verisimilitude: I don't know.
verisimilitude: APL just calls them arrays.
verisimilitude: APL calls them n-dimensional arrays.
verisimilitude: Still, I'd probably use ``tensor'' if I wanted funding from idiots.
crtdaydreams: Buzzword craze. Yeah, I getcha.
crtdaydreams: Next thing they'll throw in the ambiguous "AI" and "machine learning"
verisimilitude: My next article will cover some new abstract art I've made.
verisimilitude: Guess what the Latin word for ``mistake'' is, crtdaydreams.
crtdaydreams: I only did 10 lessons on Rosetta Stone. No idea.
verisimilitude: It's MENDVM.
crtdaydreams: That actually makes a lot of sense.
crtdaydreams: to "Amend" is derived from the latin root of mistake, with prefix A- denoting inverse.
verisimilitude: I resumed learning Latin in part to avoid going further down a crazed path with English, and yet learning it has still improved skills in both.
verisimilitude: ``Ending is better than mending.''
crtdaydreams: Still for all practical purposes EOL here.
crtdaydreams: s/EOL/English Only Language/
verisimilitude: That makes more sense than ``End of Life'', yes.
verisimilitude: I seek to unshackle my mind.
crtdaydreams: That too given a different context.
crtdaydreams: I take it then you don't suffer from any sort of information overload?
verisimilitude: The endless fountain of errant thought I possess spends most of its time contemplating nonsense.
verisimilitude: Still, all of my learning and interesting work comes from constant obsession.
verisimilitude: I don't like wasting time, such as with taxes, but I wouldn't count that towards ``information overload''.
verisimilitude: I refuse to use these APL derivatives.
crtdaydreams: I should define information overload a bit better, but perhaps it's not relevant to you whatsoever.
verisimilitude: I demand the unique symbols.
verisimilitude: Go ahead.
crtdaydreams: Information overload as in a culmination of addiction to certain social medias (youtube or whatever else one might use) and other social inputs pushing the "junk mail" of the 21st century into your mental inbox.
verisimilitude: No, then.
verisimilitude: I don't use any ``social media''.
crtdaydreams: IRC constitutes as social media/medium no?
verisimilitude: It's queer to me whenever I see someone addicted to Youtube.
verisimilitude: I do waste too much time reading stupid people arguing on the Internet, however.
crtdaydreams: So you've managed to avoid the whole conundrum through sheer wisdom altogether.
verisimilitude: Hacker News is a good example of the stupidity.
crtdaydreams: n-gate.com would've helped you save time by curating it. But it's dead now.
verisimilitude: I know of it.
crtdaydreams: I certainly agree that being too lazy for a schedule does leave plenty of room for free thought.
crtdaydreams: But for action to take place you must first have cultivated a distraction-free environment in when you feel you should write something, you may unhindered.
asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-02-11#1078870 << 'social media'(tm)(r) generally refers to pits where one (for most part passively imbibes) the excretions of fungus. rather than ~talking to people~.
dulapbot: Logged on 2022-02-11 22:22:53 crtdaydreams: IRC constitutes as social media/medium no?
crtdaydreams: asciilifeform: I'll keep that definition in mind.

crtdaydreams closes several browser tabs
verisimilitude: Unfortunately, seething at idiots occasionally feels good.
crtdaydreams: I think it might also be pertinent to point out that mebbe addiction shouldn't be confused with habits.
verisimilitude: Besides, how am I to keep track of the latest amusing Rust and JavaScript faggotry at which to laugh without Hacker News?
verisimilitude: I almost started, years ago, posting there again, to correct some of the idiots, but I realized I'd be spending all of my time doing that, and so never started.
verisimilitude: It's like watching an ant mound. Whatever they're, they're not people.
crtdaydreams: corporate chimpanzees?
verisimilitude: I don't really look at Reddit, so at least there's that.
verisimilitude: It's more like ``corporate cocksucker cuckolds''.
crtdaydreams: oblig. [insert WSL here]
verisimilitude: Oh, that.
crtdaydreams: Perhaps I should be more verbose in my choice of language.
crtdaydreams: cdd -v
verisimilitude: Say, help me consider something, crtdaydreams.
verisimilitude: I want to spread my work around more, despite the general futility; give me some suggestions for venues.
crtdaydreams: Well, take some advice on how not to do so by means of Terry Davis. Don't go around spamming forum threads and whatnot.
crtdaydreams: I understand you'd like to avoid mainstream ``social media'' which closes a lot of doors.
verisimilitude: I don't want to join them, but I don't mind my work being on them, although it would be mostly ignored anyway.
crtdaydreams: The best bet would be mailing lists (if anyone uses them anymore) for niche groups, i.e. hackerspaces or topics. Mebbe try setting up an RSS feed?
crtdaydreams: bbl, 30~ish min
verisimilitude: I'll also leave for now.
crtdaydreams: I reckon if you're serious about spreading your work, try and find some high-profile people within the field of interest of say a particular article. Do a bit of background research on them and email them. First email just inquire about their work and ask some open-ended questions, i.e. "What actions would you recommend for someone following similar footsteps." Establish repor, and within a few emails, drop them a link to the
crtdaydreams: particular article of interest. If you're lucky they'll read it and might post it on one of their social medias with possibly a few thousand active followers.
crtdaydreams: If you're unlucky, they'll drag the mail to trash without reading it and you'll never hear from them again.
crtdaydreams: Alternatively you could take a similar approach but cut right to the quick. A lot of people these days don't have time juggling about email conversations, (though genuine interest is often refreshing) and you'll get ignored. So use due diligence in how you email your recipient.

crtdaydreams: better be wild turkey, not that jim beam shit.
vex: td right now.
crtdaydreams: ``You can't just let customers pay for the features they want to add. You have to turn it into a loot box type experience where customers pay for a random feature and hope they get what they want.'' lmfao
crtdaydreams: I don't think this guy understands Moore's Law.
crtdaydreams: Oh god this evokes a physical cringe.
vex: It's just some subcontinental English. Mr Intel may use Moore's law as he sees fit
crtdaydreams: Buzzwords: Check
crtdaydreams: Democracy: Check

crtdaydreams: I could nitpick but the future of intel looks grim.

crtdaydreams: Not good?
