signpost: upstack, verisimilitude, there's this consistent tone of infantile narcissism with you. I'm curious if you're aware of it.
signpost: aside the plain fact that it's true, there may be no unbreakable hash, there are *powerful* incentives on the table to break several hashes and encryption schemes.
signpost: that it hasn't happened yet is not proof it will never happen, certainly.
signpost: yet, where I smell narcissism with you is the absolutism by which everything you deem not "perfect" beneath you, which conveniently absolves you of engaging with the world as it is, necessitating tradeoffs.
signpost: factually, you do make the same tradeoffs in kind which you're condemning here.
signpost: tldr: yawn.
asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-08-15#1052593 << this imho very good point. bitcoinism is very thorough 'acid test' for sha2. (tho with somewhat obvious caveats)

dulapbot: (trilema) 2016-10-20 asciilifeform: trinque: see thread. mining is not provably costing all of the participants anything.
dulapbot: (trilema) 2016-10-20 asciilifeform: 'there are no alchemists because an alchemist could not POSSIBLY keep it in his pants' is no argument.
signpost: yeah, can't prove a negative, though can reason about likelihood.
asciilifeform would like a hash algo that's at least based on a number-theoretical conjecture (a la pubkey systems) rather than shell games. but none afaik ever discovered to date
asciilifeform: asciilifeform's discussions of this q w/ mp resulted in the latter taking a massive shit onto the chalkboard, so to speak, and calling it 'a solution'
signpost: can't say I ever lifted the "fabulous hash function" into my head.
asciilifeform: signpost: it was nonsense, of the 'dump errything on the shelf into the cauldron, and stir' witch's grimoire variety
asciilifeform to his undying shame engaged with the bullshit as if it were a sensible artifact proposed by a sensible person
signpost: eh, when one has a leader, one uses what powers he has to rationalize the output of same. imho the risk of this *increases* among the very smart.
signpost did also.
asciilifeform: ( bonus, mp intended it to be deliberately slow hash, rather like 'argon' and similar modern-day password-derivation widgets. then asciilifeform found order-of-magnitude speedup for the bullshit and he lost interest entirely )
dulapbot: (trilema) 2017-08-15 asciilifeform: by not actually doing the flip-whole-thing bit

signpost: "this no longer produces enough pointless pain." (discards)

thimbronion: How does asciilifeform envision privmsg commands directed at nicks to work? Supported? Ignored?
asciilifeform: thimbronion: supported if nick is in direct peer set
asciilifeform was hoping to get the spec posted... then vacation as usual turned into 'workation'
verisimilitude: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-08-15#1052592 I've been told similarly before, so it may be true, signpost.

verisimilitude: One of my future articles will concern removing hash checksums from something, and perhaps making it better. Had I accepted them, this wouldn't have happened. I think we can agree unnecessarily using them is bad.
scoopbot: New post on A Syndication of Verisimilitudes: A Review of ``The Last Unicorn'' by Peter Beagle
verisimilitude: I'd like to claim this channel is but chitchat, but that would be claiming ``Signpost doesn't know the real me, only how I act around him.''.
verisimilitude: Hash checksums can be considered similar to ``AI'', in that they work but largely without good explanations as to why, and this is undesirable, even if they do work perfectly.
verisimilitude: Lastly, it amuses me asciilifeform didn't argue much, because that would be akin to writing ``Hashes are voodoo, but where would we be without voodoo?''.
verisimilitude: Feel free to offer suggestions on how I can improve my behaviour, signpost.
