asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-01-15#1029215 << i strongly rec the fun b00k 'Designing Video Game Hardware in Verilog' (S. Hugg, 2018) , will make it 100% clear.
snsabot: Logged on 2021-01-15 18:10:09 verisimilitude: It's probably bias, but I find it difficult to imagine how a non-von Neumann architecture would handle well interactively responding to the user.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: if anything, it is rather the ~vn~ machine that just barely is able to interactively respond to stimuli in realtime.
asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-01-15#1029212 << the thing plugged into a symbolics lispm.
snsabot: Logged on 2021-01-15 18:08:50 verisimilitude: To switch topics, I finished reading that Connection Machine paper earlier, and it was interesting to learn how it was actually a memory, relying on a separate machine to ask it questions. It's very different from the GA144, akin to the difference between Forth and Lisp: Cells can address cells arbitrarily far away, request free cells for allocation, links are bidirectional, no cell is wasted as wire, and each cell is even simpler than
asciilifeform: hillis was interested strictly in computation, not ui (left ui to what was then -- and, sadly, even ~now~ -- the state of the art)
asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-01-15#1029207 << plox to elaborate ?
snsabot: Logged on 2021-01-15 16:47:00 trinque: our house has a strict policy on all of this
verisimilitude: I'll make certain to try to read that book at some point, asciilifeform. I appreciate it.
trinque: asciilifeform: wife makes our cleaners, soap, etc., from simple ingredients
verisimilitude: I could suggest a brand name that I use, but I'll only do so if asked.
trinque: the homemade stuff suits me just fine
verisimilitude: I meant in the more general discussion, but I shouldn't in any case.
asciilifeform: trinque: aah makes sense
asciilifeform: trinque: this reminds me -- simple household item that asciilifeform did not think held any remaining surprises : the existence of 'sealed system' vacuum cleaners. a++ rec., picture this, doesn't fill air w/ dust as it goes...
trinque: hm nb, hadn't even bothered to consider
