asciilifeform: never said any such thing

asciilifeform: but why remove it
asciilifeform: my serial cable goes right through the closed case
asciilifeform: i didn't even drill the latter

danielpbarron: you meant the pogo board
mod6: ok im gonna shutdown this aws instance.
danielpbarron: yeah i reclosed my unit
asciilifeform: danielpbarron: feel free to screw the box shut
asciilifeform: so no reason to unplug the serial cable, ever
asciilifeform: i have no idea how anyone could have gotten the notion that this causes overheating
danielpbarron: overheating of the serial adapter, not the pogo
danielpbarron: but clearly i misunderstood you
asciilifeform: wat?!?!!
asciilifeform: can't even imagine how chinese that adapter would have to be
asciilifeform: to ever begin to overheat

danielpbarron: just had this show up:
danielpbarron: # random: nonblocking pool is initialized
nubbins`: heh.
asciilifeform: danielpbarron: i must remind you - and everyone else here - that pogo has no rng.
asciilifeform: none at all
asciilifeform: not even a very bad one.
nubbins`: ok, sorry, this turdel, what am i doing with it once gunzipped?
asciilifeform: nubbins`: it's a kernel
asciilifeform: you can boot a pogo with it
danielpbarron: can it be used with net console?
asciilifeform: doesn't dhcp by default, so no
asciilifeform: i just tested the nic
danielpbarron: i don't think mine does dhcp and still works
asciilifeform: nic works
asciilifeform: danielpbarron: odd
danielpbarron: i don't mean now that it's booted
danielpbarron: imean in uboot
asciilifeform: i didn't change the uboot
danielpbarron: setenv serverip 192...
asciilifeform: dear glub
danielpbarron: yeah i know, i mean whatever thing i put on it
asciilifeform: uboot is in a separate nand partition
asciilifeform: i didn't touch it
asciilifeform: what i put up just now as turdel-with-rootfs is just a kernel
asciilifeform: i don't even flash these in, booting from lan
asciilifeform: or probably would've worn out my nand already
danielpbarron: i mean that i had previously flashed in a different uboot
asciilifeform: and booting arch every time i do a build would be retarded
danielpbarron: one that lets me set a serverip
asciilifeform: but that normally doesn't get you past the kernel jump-in
danielpbarron: as it boots it says "so and so is alive'
asciilifeform: after that it goes straight out ttyS0
asciilifeform: so danielpbarron's 'works' does not mean logging in through netconsole ?
asciilifeform: as in, to the shell
danielpbarron: i have not tried with the thing you just made
asciilifeform: ok more logical
asciilifeform: don't expect that to work
asciilifeform: this turdel is strictly for folks with serial ports
asciilifeform: barring any other peculiar surprises, we have a linux kernel that builds for pogo, and runs there
asciilifeform: and an elementary userland to go with it
asciilifeform: ('busybox'-based)
asciilifeform: weights slightly under 5MB but can be cut a bit
asciilifeform: *weighs
danielpbarron: trying now
danielpbarron: oh i see what you mean
danielpbarron: i remember why this didn't work with the netbsd one
danielpbarron: what is the point of netcat then?
asciilifeform: which 'this'
asciilifeform: danielpbarron: the point of the console-over-netcat was strictly to be able to screw with u-boot (adjust boot device, etc.) without having the serial port
danielpbarron: ok nevermind, nubbins` learn to solder
asciilifeform: this won't be an issue for much longer
asciilifeform: i'ma fix it so it grabs a dhcp addr. tomorrow.
danielpbarron: i feel a lot more confident to write documentation on that now
asciilifeform: btw this is not what the proper kernel will look like
danielpbarron: i was really confused about netcat to be honest
asciilifeform: because linux supports the nand just fine
asciilifeform: and there is no reason to clutter up the precious ram
asciilifeform: with crap
asciilifeform: userland (incl. bitcoind) will live in nand
asciilifeform: right now they're stuffed in the kernel proper
asciilifeform: when all of this makes sense - i'll post the diff.
danielpbarron: well i'll also leave mine on overnight
danielpbarron: oh btw, what color is the light on yours?
danielpbarron: i was gonna call it orange
asciilifeform: this simply means the bicolor is on
asciilifeform: as in, both bits set
danielpbarron: it's not green and not red
asciilifeform: laugh, but this also must be fixed
asciilifeform: it'll be most people's only interface to their nodes...
danielpbarron: my arch pogos have working lights
danielpbarron: they are green 24/7
asciilifeform: danielpbarron: do you remember how to toggle them ?
danielpbarron: i think it's in the debian instructions nubbins` found
danielpbarron: #set archNumber and machid (for LED)
danielpbarron: /tmp/fw_setenv arcNumber 3960
danielpbarron: /tmp/fw_setenv machid F78

davout: mike_c: howso?
mike_c: how do you trade in a company with no revenue and 10k bitcoin on the books?
davout: i'd naively say you'd base a valuation on the cash assets?
mike_c: heh, well, it's currently trading below book value
mike_c: but, point being, these stocks are generally held by serious investors and aren't going to have huge turnover.
davout: i see
mike_c: so without the options, where does mpex get revenue? it's an issue, and one that may be being reflected now in the stock price
mike_c: of course, the options exchange was hardly closed without reason (including some that remained unspoken), so it's tough to bring it back.
mike_c: davout: re I think the problem there is that it is speculative whether they will be able to generate enough revenue to move the needle on the share price. so you might have your capital frozen in a stock that is basically valued as a pile of cash.
mike_c: which is why some people who would rather have the cash themselves are willing to dump it at 90% of book value.
mike_c: and I think it's too bad because it's an exciting company. if they're never going to spend the money, maybe just special dividend it back to the shareholders.
jurov: they will find a way to circulate them into ingame economy, that is not so big problem
mike_c: people have to pay to play, what do they need seed money for the game for?
jurov: not a q for me
jurov: i should not have vented here, perhaps am just disillusioned how shabbily it works, deposits, dividends
mike_c: around the edges it is rough, but the important parts are rock solid.
jurov: i fucked too intimately with said parts to put myself behind such statement
mike_c: you think the trading engine isn't solid? or security?
jurov: security is good. but i won't repeat myself about the other stuff
mike_c: i've heard you talk about stuff like 'eventually consistent' and the statements missing some useful tracking features.
mike_c: but i've never heard about problems like 'my bid didn't match the best offer'
mike_c: except one time where something got fucked with a proxy i think :)
mike_c: but once in x years isn't bad
jurov: yes, if that's all you expect from an exchange...

jurov: deposits/withdrawals/pushes aren't shown in stat
mike_c: ah, right
jurov: and there were misc options.futures expirations
mike_c: yes, that was suboptimal :)
mike_c: but actually i thought we got that fixed
jurov: except for x.eur balances vanishing in the middle of month (at least it's at known time) and reappearing any time later
jurov: and dunno if you remember, there were daily interest payments in the beginning. without stat mention and at random times
mike_c: this is part of the reason though too. products come and go, with different features.
mike_c: x.eur hasn't been around that long. if it sticks around long enough, i'm sure it will work better.
jurov: what reason?
mike_c: part of the reason there are rough edges is that there are a lot of different products on mpex
mike_c: with differing needs
mike_c: path 1: engineer each product perfectly and ship 20 months late (sorry s.nsa). path 2: push it out, make sure it works as advertised, if it gets popular and sticks around, smooth out rough edges.
jurov: well, if mpex isn't now structurally able to issue information like "BalanceChange":[{"Date:": "blabla","MPSIC": "X.EUR", "Change": "-100", "Reason" :"Future expiration"}]

mircea_popescu: asciilifeform ok, prepare for a lengthy explanation then.
asciilifeform: if tomorrow a white van picks up the remaining 5000 (?) pogos, how do 'we win' ?
asciilifeform prepared
mircea_popescu: suppose you are in a room, with women. there's 100 of them.
mircea_popescu: they're all naked and dripping. suppose that someone for whatever stupid reason does not want you to fuck, because they imagine this is how you don't get to kill them.
mircea_popescu: now, the reason this is stupid, on multiple planes, we won't dsiscuss here, for space.
mircea_popescu: BUT! if the solution they come up with is to make an artefact which convinces 99% of the women sorted by stupidity that they shouldn't fuck you,
mircea_popescu: while also providing sufficient proof for 1% that in fact someone's trying to interfere
mircea_popescu: this artefact is actually your best bet.
mircea_popescu: that make sense ?
asciilifeform: it almost begins to
mod6: huh, the statically linked binary is between 5.6 and 5.2mb. On my x86_64 builds it was often around 5.6mb. i just pulled up my paste from the debian x86_32 bit build (, here's 5.2mb. and yesterday on gentoo x86_32 it was 5.6mb.
mircea_popescu: so, filling reddit with apparently correct but actually provably falsifiable nonsense is not something that concerns me.
asciilifeform: but as i understand, it resolves to 'they have lost the mandate of heaven, will be defeated eventually'
mircea_popescu: it HELPS me.
mircea_popescu: one direction, yes.
mircea_popescu: the other direction being that you DO NOT WISH the attenntion of most of those women.
mircea_popescu: some smell bad.
mircea_popescu: some are ugly.
mircea_popescu: NOT having to turn them down personally is empowering for you.
asciilifeform: the nonsense on reddit does nothing - granted
asciilifeform: but let's address the van.
mircea_popescu: imagine a device that kept paul atreides from having to fight all the idiot freemen.
mircea_popescu: WORTH GOLD
mircea_popescu: and there's more directions.
mircea_popescu: as to van : people like a congressman or an ex ciadirector are very poor examples, because a key part of the cure is maintaining very hard counter-terrorism measures on the ground. no colby, owens, petreus etc ever said "you will have to shoot me, and expect to fail unless you bring armored units, and to lose a score of operatives in any case."
asciilifeform: say van picks'em up. this gives us no useful 'smoking gun' beyond 'sorry chaps, they all sold out last night. no, can't tell ya who bought'
mircea_popescu: people who go "sure, whatever. make sure you have good AP and check the vests" are not the target of this sort of bs.
mircea_popescu: the weird thing about the situaiton of usg particularly, and of usg-likes (ie, most cancer) is that "everything is only intended to be used in the situations it wasn't designed to be used".
mircea_popescu: air superiority not useful in air engagement, but in political engagement sort of bs.
mircea_popescu: if air superiority comes to air engagement, walks away with so many broken arms it's not worth thinking about.
mircea_popescu: this is why all the ridiculous military failures of the us since vietnam : it built an army which is only useful as an army if NOT fighting.
asciilifeform: it is also, apparently, quite useful for rocketing unarmed men in their sleep
asciilifeform: and occupation of own cities (see boston)
asciilifeform: and many other interesting things which have yet to be demoed
mircea_popescu: sorta like a parade army. exactly what the italians had, right before the risorgimento.
mircea_popescu: right, but none of which are what an army is actually for.
mircea_popescu: the us army makes excellent police and screwdrivers. bully for it.
asciilifeform: the equipment (and selected men) steadily gets transfered to police (soon to be unified gendarmerie) forces
asciilifeform: who are actually trained for the kind of thing that it's all ultimately for
mircea_popescu: if your crazy genius lab consisted of shitty hot tweezers that made good sandwiches and very bad vacuum pumps that sang a capella i'd think you're uniquely ineffectual.
asciilifeform: see BingoBoingo's link
mircea_popescu: and if THAT were your lab, i wouldn't particularly be persuaded by "no tb cure could exist" type of arguments.
mircea_popescu: because what, if it did exist you'd lunge at it with your waffle making hot tweezers ?
asciilifeform: so, running with this line of thought, what might we expect 'the cure' to look like?
mircea_popescu: this, incidentally, is ALSO not controversial - virtually half of all material prepared by the bureaucracy states in one form or another that they're "not prepared for this type of challenge"
mircea_popescu: it's true : they haven't yet made a thing for something else to use for this.
mircea_popescu: the cure looks very much like you'd imagine : strong encryption, strong (mental especially) discipline, minimal fortification along the riverline.
mircea_popescu: as long as it's clear to the da that a court showdown will end his career, you're practically unprosecutable, no matter what you do. as long as it's clear to "special ops" that there will be deaths, you're un-opable, no matter what you do. etc etc.
mircea_popescu: the entire construction has very speciffic dead points, and they're anything but secret.
mircea_popescu: swedish military doctrine, notably, is constructed around the core concept that they do not aim to defend the country, they aim to make invasion economically unfeasible. that is all.
asciilifeform: as long as it's clear to "special ops" that there will be deaths << this is possible if living in a bunker
mircea_popescu: this does not work against ideologically motivated adversaries, but it works against bureaucracies something splendid. there's always another fire to put out.
asciilifeform: if ambling about the terrain going to/from day jobs, etc. - they just quietly pick you up
asciilifeform: what is one to do, wear trotyl vest ?
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform no, this is possible if maintaining decent op security.
mircea_popescu: yes, if you must do that, wear vest might work.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: make invasion economically unfeasible << you may be thinking of the swiss
mircea_popescu: but for as long as the "how do they know it's not really an ambush ?" question has an obvious and correct answer, you already failed.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform afaik swiss defend themselves by "neutrality"
asciilifeform: not exactly.
mircea_popescu: they installed a bunch of autobatteries and shitnow ? /me's not been keeping up.
asciilifeform: spent quite a bit during cold war
asciilifeform: not sure about now
asciilifeform: and trained decently.
mircea_popescu: <asciilifeform> if ambling about the terrain going to/from day jobs, etc. - they just quietly pick you up << a ro guy famously caught a coupla "secret agents" tailing him in traffic, beat them up (romanian tradition) took them to police station.
mircea_popescu: huge scandal ensued.
asciilifeform: on .ch army org
asciilifeform: ^ pretty good
mircea_popescu: cost teh ro govt millions to try and wash it up, eventually was more or less forgotten. but finding agents willing to tail that guy was difficult for years after.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: that'd work about as well here as it would in peak nazi de
mircea_popescu: it would work splendidly.
asciilifeform: they'd demolish the street where you stood.
mircea_popescu: there's going to be a demolished street bearing your name.
asciilifeform: we in fact saw this play out
asciilifeform: in boston
mircea_popescu: exactly.
asciilifeform: and what result ?
mircea_popescu: major losses for teh usg.
asciilifeform: i dun see it.
mircea_popescu: maybe our optics differ.
asciilifeform: they evidently must
mircea_popescu: maybe it's because you're trying to use some sort of subjective scoring it occurs to me
mircea_popescu: ie, "what the participant thinks happens matters".
asciilifeform: not exactly
mircea_popescu: so in this sense, a junkie managing to score a hit is in fact +ev.
mircea_popescu: he will act as if he is, yes. but... he's not.
asciilifeform: say i'm a generic schmuck living in berlin in march, this day in '43
trinque: isn't the demolished street only helpful if there are onlookers who care?
asciilifeform: it looks mostly normal
mircea_popescu: trinque no. the street was in fact demolished.
asciilifeform: but stalingrad happened
asciilifeform: show me the stalingrad
trinque: mircea_popescu: right, but I recall joe stack day
trinque: and the ratio of people reacting sanely to not
mircea_popescu: trinque good for you. not particularly relevant to him.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform i dun follow.
trinque: maybe the ratio's irrelevant
asciilifeform: where are the -real- cracks in the reich
mircea_popescu: they had to demolish a street ?
asciilifeform: and what, they are to go broke from paving a street?
mircea_popescu: i can trivially send pizza to the "secret" subsecretary of state for whatever, and he's stuck wondering how i know ?
mircea_popescu: yes, actually.
asciilifeform: the damage from tsarnavev & tsarnaev was roughly comparable to a small 'pile up' wreck on the highway.
asciilifeform: not even rounding error.
mircea_popescu: there is no undertaking more expensive than that pavement job.
asciilifeform: so perhaps 'demolished a street' is exaggerated
mircea_popescu: i disagree.
mircea_popescu: let's take the cheapest way out. familiar wit hthe guy whose name history has lost (:P) that set fire to the whatever so his name may be remembered ?
asciilifeform: herostratus aha
asciilifeform: that worked once.
asciilifeform: (exactly once)
mircea_popescu: familiar with the (afaik also uncontroversial) theory that the us is a nation of narcisists ?
mircea_popescu: does it seem to you a reasonable plan to demolish streets in this atmosphere ?
asciilifeform: sure, when you're working with -cowardly- and -imbecilic- narcissists
mircea_popescu: you think that matters ?
trinque: seems easy to convince the narcissist it's "not him"
trinque: would never be him
trinque: because he's not one of "those people"
asciilifeform: who take three steps and (fail to) blow (themselves) up with a (fake) rocket sold to them by usg.
mircea_popescu: trinque understand something : if one million people becomes 1% more likely to lie on their taxes,
mircea_popescu: the government has lost 3-4% of its revenue.
asciilifeform: because 'friend of 30 years' vouched for the broker
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform you're neglecting the only important thing here, which is the actual fine points of the relationship between the abused wife and her husband.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: eh no. they take it out of the captive tax cows - sales, shrinkflation, outright moneyprinter
mircea_popescu: that does not work.
mircea_popescu: for a government to survive, it must actually have support.
asciilifeform: rock solid support from the cattle
trinque: mircea_popescu: there are militia groups around calling themselves "three percenters"
mircea_popescu: the fake shows of support (you are charlie, really ?) do not help.
trinque: that kind of thing?
mircea_popescu: trinque no particular kind of thing.
asciilifeform: trinque: the 'militia' thing is solid usg provocateurism from day one
asciilifeform: trinque: judging by the results
mircea_popescu: if anyone is curious enough, please to read the gorbachev diaries after his 87 visit in romania.
mircea_popescu: very short story here : ceausescu made old style, stalinist-like show of how supported he is
mircea_popescu: trying to finesse himself into a senior adviser role for gorby
mircea_popescu: this amused the russian to no end.
mircea_popescu: but that aside, it all boils down to the ancient (here and iirc on trilema too) "what's the devil have to pay you to love him" thing.
asciilifeform: the sovblok fell down with nato holding a seemingly soft (in reality not so much) cushion under its arse as it fell
asciilifeform: nobody is playing that role for usg
asciilifeform: the buggers know that 'it'll be their necks'
asciilifeform: in the way that gorby didn't
mircea_popescu: what does their knowledge matter ?
mircea_popescu: they know they suck, now.
mircea_popescu: what can they do ?
mircea_popescu: take a simple thing : they all know ms is shit.
mircea_popescu: what can any one do to fix this ?
mircea_popescu: still using it.
mircea_popescu: still shit.
mircea_popescu: and i can send them pizza, and they have to wonder how i know.
mircea_popescu: and they go to work... and there it is. MICROSOFT BOOTING NAO.
mircea_popescu: and yet... what can they do ?
asciilifeform: it 'works' for them in the sense that no nsa-crypto directorate leaks. no meaningful cia leaks. perhaps they use 'underwood' typewriters instead of microshit ?
mircea_popescu: part of a system is part of a system is part of a system.
asciilifeform: damned if i know. but it 'works'
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform if it didn't how'd you know ?
mircea_popescu: the german public didn't know about the enigma leaks.
asciilifeform: if it didn't in the same sense of 'didn't' as elsewhere in usg, i would know
asciilifeform: or at least suspect
mircea_popescu: the fact that you don't is perhaps one of the most perplexing characteristics of your otherwise amply perplexing persona.
mircea_popescu: at least in my head.
asciilifeform: that don't what
asciilifeform even more confused
mircea_popescu: at least suspect.
asciilifeform: well admittedly, i suspect many things
mircea_popescu: but not this ?
asciilifeform: but some with better grounding than others
asciilifeform: let's say herr buffet's winblows machine, where he keeps tabs with his lizard commander, was owned.
mircea_popescu: but this strawman is in no case how it'd work is it.
asciilifeform: there is not a public display of this. ergo 'pwner' did not see it fit to do this.
mircea_popescu: let's have a better model.
nubbins`: re: field pogos
asciilifeform: nubbins`: aha?
nubbins`: what's the LED gonna do for two weeks while the thing downloads and indexes blocks? 8)
asciilifeform: nubbins`: blink.
trinque: not trying to derail what's an excellent convo without me; is for example the ease with which us politicians are bought by *any* paying interest relevant here?
nubbins`: but that's what a bricked pogo does as well
asciilifeform: nubbins`: that's because u-boot sets it a'blinking by default
asciilifeform: nubbins`: easily fixed
nubbins`: a-haa
trinque: seems the whole military side can't be considered in absence of the side which can't form one coherent thought
nubbins`: i'm just musing about indications of progress
nubbins`: a blink isn't communicating much
trinque: what admittedly worries me is an event where the military side detaches from the braindead side entirely
trinque: not sure what happens after that
mircea_popescu: so, i am a famously grandiose master of women. and a junior girl aspiring one day to the grandiose status of being my slave goes with me and some of the girls to the opera. lights go off, the girls take off their tops all matter-of-course like. she follows suit. why ? and then, afterwards, we discuss it over coffee and cookies. they are enamoured with it. so is she. why ? her "tabs" haven't been leaked, right ? what if
mircea_popescu: the stripping is something we agreed aforehand to do just to see what her reaction is ?
mircea_popescu: better model ^
mircea_popescu: trinque honestly, this is why i believe the arming of police units with military stock is even done. it makes sense from a "after the end" perspective : you want two mostly balanced forces, because that's your best chance at more or less peaceful stability.
trinque: yes exactly that
mircea_popescu: note how it follows quite exactly the cure blueprint discussed above.
jurov: ;;later tell nubbins` key added

nubbins` sends mail, crosses digits
mircea_popescu: the notion that "sucidal resistence" is deterring anyone has had so much debunking recently...

nubbins`: there's this famous guy here, leo crockwell. put a gun to his sister's head a few years ago
mircea_popescu: we discussed some time ago the problem with decimation, re shot cops.
nubbins`: cops, having dealt with (and been embarassed by) the guy in the past, descend
nubbins`: he barricades self, cops bring out robot.
asciilifeform: the robot is a logical step to the escalation of usg police practice
asciilifeform: used to be they'd politely ask you to come to the station
asciilifeform: today, breaking down door at 3am and barrel in your mouth is NORMAL
mircea_popescu: just like the cataphract is a logical step to the escalation of ... THE END OF FEUDALISM!

asciilifeform: the other two barrels, no idea
decimation: is that the bot they sent after the boston bombers
asciilifeform: (speaking of the black barrel)
asciilifeform: decimation: nope
asciilifeform: decimation: from earlier newpiece today re: a tax guy
decimation: it has some kind of other gun on its left 'arm'
decimation: maybe paintball?
asciilifeform: i count 3 barrels
assbot: Logged on 26-03-2015 20:44:33; asciilifeform: still think 'usg as high-tech north kr is impossible', ?
decimation: one of them might be a laser
decimation: although it is a large barrel for a laser
mircea_popescu: i'd expect smoke launchers etc.
decimation: usians have been brainwashed too long to be turned into north kr-ites
mircea_popescu: << everyone's going to be the first guy to stick a finger in teenaged pussy. FOREVER.
assbot: Logged on 26-03-2015 21:28:26; jurov: " is set to become the world’s first trading platform with a direct connection to the classic banking system" davout perhaps you may something to say about that?
assbot: [MPEX] [S.MPOE] 166947 @ 0.00024425 = 40.7768 BTC [-] {2}
decimation: weirdly the dec 19 SPY put option with the most open interest is 135
decimation: current 'money' is at 205
nubbins`: asciilifeform danielpbarron etc
mircea_popescu: decimation bear in mind that this sort of thing is seen often enough.
mircea_popescu: it always seems remarkable when the sec comes out with "oh, clearly they had insider info, held 90% of this improbable strike". but if you go combing over the market, you'll see lots of similar situations all the time.
decimation: mircea_popescu: apparently so. I'm trying to find a way to hedge my mostly long position on us equities
mircea_popescu: options are rarely the way to go for something like that.
decimation: well these days bonds and stocks trade as one
decimation: because the whole thing is predicated on 'usg prints money true/false'
asciilifeform: nubbins`: congrats
nubbins`: still working on cross-compile toolchain for darwin->arm
asciilifeform: nubbins`: 'buildroot' builds cross-chain
asciilifeform: on just about any reasonable unix
asciilifeform: and i mean all of it
nubbins`: hm, i'll cheggidout
asciilifeform: nubbins`: it's what i'm building the whole shebang (as seen in turdel) with
asciilifeform: nubbins`: my plan is to fit bitcoind & its deps in there
asciilifeform: as just another 'package'
decimation: asciilifeform: ideally the thing would have a small lcd terminal for programming ips, keys, etc
asciilifeform: the output is a kernel and a rootfs (in 'turdel', deliberately baked into one binary to simplify testing)
asciilifeform: decimation: ideally i would be designing it full time in b-a or whatnot
decimation: not that this would be of any use to the target audience
asciilifeform: decimation: and it would be baking in my personal fab
asciilifeform: but we're on 'junkyard wars' not 'who wants to be a quadrillionaire'
decimation: wait do you mean argentina or #b-a
asciilifeform: the former
asciilifeform: (just as example)
asciilifeform doesn't know for a fact whether he could tolerate it long-term
nubbins`: spent much time in a foreign country?
asciilifeform: nubbins`: yes, 22 years.
decimation: asciilifeform: well if I win the swedish lottery I'll fund your fab
asciilifeform: decimation: i don't think any lottery on the planet pays a tenth of what it'd cost.
decimation: oh a full chip fab?
asciilifeform: chip fab and army
asciilifeform: and pet economy to feed the two.
decimation: asciilifeform: so you basically want singapore
asciilifeform: sumthinglikethat
asciilifeform: but this is rather like asking about that kind of martial colony would feel best
decimation: well, I would pick an island in the middle of the pacific for definisibility
asciilifeform: not enough info from my perch to even say something reasonable beyond 'it ain't happening'
decimation: defensibility
nubbins`: dat off-brand battery
asciilifeform: island only works if you have thermonukes ready to pop in every major enemy population centre and they know it.
decimation: eh, kinda
decimation: the island is good because if you can operate a reasonable air and sea defense system, you are pretty well protected
decimation: if people wanna use icbm's they are gonna have to be committed
asciilifeform: 'tomahawk'
asciilifeform: much cheaper
nubbins`: asciilifeform:nubbins`: yes, 22 years. <<< lel @ me
decimation: cruise missiles are just as vulnerable as other aircraft
assbot: Logged on 08-02-2014 00:14:28; asciilifeform: imagine you possess a death ray that magically zaps a rocket, from any distance.
asciilifeform: (summary: defence doesn't work)
decimation: asciilifeform: yes, and on an island you can be the one lobbing rockets at whatever ship/aircraft is lobbing rockets at you
decimation: the whole problem of air defense becomes much simpler once you can enumerate goodness
mircea_popescu: entire fucking building reeks of pot. these people...
mircea_popescu: it's like being in a campus
mircea_popescu: decimation options have a very strong time correlation. unless you have a very clear date in mind, they're not usually the right tool
decimation: aye, you have to 'leap' from one ex date to the next
mircea_popescu: if you do that you will lose money.
mircea_popescu: who was the guy with the "short" fund, had some of the horrid0est results ever. i recall discussed here maybe cca 2013
decimation: well, the problem I have is picking the stirke price and quantity that is appropriate
decimation: there are plenty of short funds avialable, but they all have extremely high costs
mircea_popescu: if you wish to be equity neutral the more common strategy is "buy the equities short the index" or vice-versa.
mircea_popescu: this is very time-invariant.
decimation: yeah that's a fair point
mircea_popescu: <decimation> asciilifeform: yes, and on an island you can be the one lobbing rockets at whatever ship/aircraft is lobbing rockets at you << no you can't. why do you think "international waters" are so important.
decimation: well, presumably if they are firing on you from every steradian you have your rights
mircea_popescu: you have to sink the ship befroe it fires.
mircea_popescu: after, what's it gonna do.
decimation: declare the surrounding 2000 miles of sea to be territorial
mircea_popescu: this is a nude declaration of war.
nubbins`: 2000!
nubbins`: my sides
mircea_popescu: and what happens once some schmoe makes the 2100 mile tomahawk ? you redeclare ?
decimation: no, you shoot it down once it hits your 2000 mile border without ident
mircea_popescu: it doesn't. sits at 2050 miles and waves.
decimation: can do until it runs out of fuel
mircea_popescu: what, plutonium ?
decimation: the point is, at 2000 miles it would be infeasible to 'fire on all sides'
asciilifeform: decimation: lobbing rockets, etc. is a contest of who has the largest pet economy to milk
nubbins`: this is hypothetical to the point of absurdity
asciilifeform: decimation: or do you imagine that even something as basic as 'v1' can be built from dirt
asciilifeform: nubbins`: what a cosmographer does is even less tangible, but we owe a good chunk of early physics to them.
decimation: it's a fair point, one would have to have a large chunk of wealth
asciilifeform: decimation: wealth as in functioning tame economy and natural resources.
asciilifeform: not as in 'numbers in account'
asciilifeform: esp. not if said account lives among the folks you intend to blow up
mircea_popescu: this entire "i'd get an island" thing is not unlike the strange idea of the british troops to wear red.
mircea_popescu: yeah... that'll work...
decimation: it did 'work' for a few hundred years
asciilifeform: pre-aircraft
mircea_popescu: right. but you're in the wrong hundred.
mircea_popescu: see, if i had the magical stone that lets you turn time back FOR THE OTHERS
mircea_popescu: i wouldn't bother with the island.
decimation: okay, if not an island? where ?
nubbins`: ಠ_ಠ
decimation: hawala works fine for finance but not for real estate
asciilifeform: it also, very notably, does not work especially well for physical objects as a class.
asciilifeform: last i checked, there were no teleporters.
mircea_popescu: i dun get it.
mircea_popescu: what is this objection ?
decimation: where's ascii gonna locate his fab, to be specific
asciilifeform: objection to a hypothetical 'locale doesn't matter'
mircea_popescu: why does locale matter ?
mircea_popescu: decimation the best solution to his problem would seem to me, bribing someone to defraud an existing fab
mircea_popescu: rather than "build his own"
asciilifeform: and trust the product from fraud ?
asciilifeform: and have item fabbed on winblows tools ?
mircea_popescu: the price for trying to be "supergovernment" is that you lose your claim to title for anything you might "own"
mircea_popescu: much like un declared tyrants lose their bank accounts.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform have it secretly dualboot for all i care.
asciilifeform very confused
mircea_popescu: have them upgrade to archlinux "for their own interest".
asciilifeform: how does this 'solve'
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: try to recall the thread where we illustrate that the entire extant ic fab ecosystem sits on two or three winblows-only turdwares that's easily 10,000 man-years each
