davout: kakobrekla: sierrachart is something like metatrader ?
davout: kakobrekla: (pardon my ignorance)
kakobrekla: well yes and no
davout: like a client you connect to your broker ? (or directly to an exchange? i'd imagine not)
davout: does it use fix ?

kakobrekla: but lots of ppl use it to chart only
davout: i see
BitHub: there are heaps of peeps working on software like that tho for cryptos
davout: howso
kakobrekla: this is fun: We see that the MTGox data feed is not entirely reliable and also from an engineering perspective, its technical implementation really is very confusing and not well structured. They are using what is called a web socket and then on top of that Socket I/O . This is unnecessary and the method by which this is implemented is not technically correct. So we are not very impressed with the MTGox data feed. This is just a comment.
davout: interesting, so it's sierracharts itself that collects the feed from mtgox
kakobrekla: not sure what their implementation will be exactly
kakobrekla: i mean if they will proxy it or no, im guessing they will
davout: relying on the mtgox ws feed sounds like folly
kakobrekla: anyway you will be able to trade from it somehow apparently

kakobrekla: You can retrieve the engine lag from https://data.mtgox.com/api/1/generic/order/lag . Sometimes this grows to couple of minutes, and every order you send (or quotes) are delayed by this amount. So it's nice to know about this value when doing trades.
kakobrekla: Sierra Chart Engineering : Interesting. Never heard of such a concept when it comes to trading. We would think that immediate execution should always be achieved as much as possible.

optimator: ezdiy: when a new block is found the pool code pushes work out with no txs. it does this while it builds the new merkle root. that way the miners have work immediately
optimator: and on the off chance someone solves it everyone is rewarded
ezdiy: optimator: not most optimal solution then, though :/
ezdiy: i'm surprised theres no bloody murder scream from users about 1-tx blocks
optimator: we'll it's beyond a long shot - within seconds new work is pushed with transactions. Otherwise the miners would be working on work for a block that had already been solved
ezdiy: yeah
optimator: s/we'll/well
ezdiy: but the underlying idea is only greed
ezdiy: it profits only the miners, not users
ezdiy: s/profits/benefits/
optimator: i see it as rewarding them for their work on the network
ezdiy: optimator: no, the merkle root should be updated continuously by slush
ezdiy: not when new block arrives
ezdiy: thats just being lazy, to the detriment of users
ezdiy: this is why hasprevblock is separate after all
optimator: it doesn't work that way. The block height is incorporated into the hash function. So you can know what to push unless you know the block you are working on
ezdiy: you, you have to re-verify txes which use same utxos as the txes in newly arrived block
optimator: imagine a queue that you are pushing new txs on. You keep building it up, but when a new block is found the queueu is emptied
ezdiy: but you *dont* have to to verify sigs again
ezdiy: => its crazy fast
ezdiy: i call lazy
ezdiy: optimator: yes, thats how it works and why slush pushes empty merkle for the mean time

ezdiy: spinning drives will go crazy :/

optimator: asciilifeform: no - and it kinda freaks me out. I think SSL cert authentication through a PKI is a gapping hole
asciilifeform: SSL is a joke by design.
mircea_popescu: actually this is interesting
mircea_popescu: because of the change issue. wallet.dat was stolen
asciilifeform: btw there is never any real need to steal wallet.dat. all you need to do is patch bitcoind (or whatever) on the disk so that it sends everything to address X when you finally key in the passphrase.
optimator: mircea_popescu: it's very interesting - I like the conclusion of the time the wallet was stolen
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform bitcoind is such a mess it'd be easier to make a million dollars being a janitor.
asciilifeform: as far as the world could tell (even if you log all the packets coming out of your home) it will look like you voluntarily donated your stash to X.
mircea_popescu: "I haven't nor will I ask for donations. This truly sucks for me, but I only want to find out how this happened. I wish I could see the code/method used for educational purposes. Fuck people who steal. I strive for bitcoins and litecoins to gain popularity among the masses and become an accepted currency in societies eyes."
mircea_popescu: always funny when people with 85 ltc speak of the masses.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: believe me (or not, your choice) this is actually very, very easy.
asciilifeform: this <- patching bitcoind.
mircea_popescu: "In fact, scratch the social engineering, you don't need to convince someone to run your .exe if you can just run your .exe for them via a Java drive-by attack, and admit it, you've left Java installed for extended periods of time, even if you try to keep it uninstalled normally."
mircea_popescu: people actually still use java ?!
mircea_popescu: "I know I've found this one thing that I just have to download and install Java for, then totally forget or put off uninstalling it afterwards, many a time."
optimator: mircea_popescu: 85 * 3.12 = wealth for the masses
asciilifeform: some people have jre installed for wurk, etc
asciilifeform: and some people shit in their kitchen, yes
mircea_popescu: on an actual machine ?

asciilifeform: you'd be surprised
mircea_popescu: i guess.
asciilifeform: jre is just a well-known egregous case. drive-bys are regularly discovered in just about every consumer browser
mircea_popescu: but what the fuck for, seriously.
asciilifeform: *egregious
asciilifeform: my other point is that btc ups the ante for working on hard targets as well as soft ones. you can do some very nice MITM with a compromised router, for instance.

mircea_popescu: "I figured if I was ever the victim of a wallet stealing program, implementing a dummy in the default location would fool it and upload it, rather than my real one, to the attackers choice, but I was wrong."
mircea_popescu: yeah srsly.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform give me an example.
asciilifeform: re: btc specifically?
optimator: ah - the empty-wallet-fake-em-out security measure
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform re your router mitm
mircea_popescu: optimator not sure why people imagine machines locate items by name
asciilifeform: feel free to interpret my silence as proof that I'm full of shit, but personally I'm rather fond of living.
mircea_popescu: Used bitcoin-qt and litecoin-qt. For the wallets, those encryption passwords were from memory. The truecrypt password, I always copied and pasted the password from a text file, on a USB drive, inside a password protected winrar file, inside of a password protected winrar file, inside of a password protected winrar file, totaling 3 different password protected rars to reach the .txt file.
mircea_popescu: who the fuck designed this process ;/
mircea_popescu: anyway, thanks optimator, most entertaining link
dub: I have to run 8 year old java versions
asciilifeform: I'll mention one example from places far away. In certain countries, doctored root certs are routinely placed into default ms-windows installs wherever possible.
mircea_popescu: i don't think it has anything to do with the 2fa mtgox issue but anyway
dub: several different ones
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform the ideea is, suppose i pass all my traffic through your controlled relay
asciilifeform: then, mass MITM of gmail, etc
mircea_popescu: a linux box, rather than a router, for convenience.
mircea_popescu: so now what ?
dub: almost every ssl cert in this environment is self signed and long epired
assbot: [BTCTC] [ASICMINER-PT] 1 @ 1.549899 BTC [+]
asciilifeform: now you go to a site with routinely botched ssl, like mtgox (at least in the recent past), and then click "what the hell" when your browser complains
dub: such is corplife
asciilifeform: alternatively, a drive-by is used to make your machine click "yes" for you.
optimator: asciilifeform: don't forget this approach to compromising ssl sercurity - https://freedom-to-tinker.com/blog/sjs/how-the-nokia-browser-decrypts-ssl-traffic-a-man-in-the-client/
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform except i never use a site over https anyway
mircea_popescu: dub sux to be you bro.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: yes, the girls calculate RSA signatures for you with paper and pencil
asciilifeform: or ought to
dub: you'll find the same thing at most f500's
mircea_popescu: why do they need to calculate rsa or wut ?
asciilifeform: to sign mpex messages?
mircea_popescu: mpex is http

asciilifeform: pgp over http (or, someday, over pigeon?)
mircea_popescu: well yes
mircea_popescu: you hadn't noticed ?!
asciilifeform: as it should be. but if a PC is involved, you might run into strange one day
mircea_popescu: "x86 virtualization is about basically placing another nearly full kernel, full of new bugs, on top of a nasty x86 architecture which barely has correct page protection."
mircea_popescu: great quote that.
asciilifeform: did I write that?
mircea_popescu: "Then running your operating system on the other side of this brand new pile of shit. You are absolutely deluded, if not stupid, if you think that a worldwide collection of software engineers who can't write operating systems or applications without security holes, can then turn around and suddenly write virtualization layers without security holes."
mircea_popescu: i was actually thinking, is this our d friend ?
asciilifeform: ok, wasn't me this time. but "I approve of this message (tm)"
asciilifeform: vm escapes run the spectrum from the apocalyptic to the "it always worked this way and we don't give a fuck"
asciilifeform: example of the latter: many (most?) xen installs let you set the virtual nic card into promiscuous mode if you root one running os

assbot: [BTCTC] [ASICMINER-PT] 3 @ 1.54995 = 4.6499 BTC [+]
mircea_popescu: so what's the point of virtualization then
asciilifeform: so you can rent a "server" to chumps without actually using one up
asciilifeform: it is like fractional reserve banking for the hosting business.
asciilifeform: some machine architectures (ibm mainframes) had virtualization baked in in an intelligent way, vs. the x86 retrofit

mircea_popescu: this may actuallty be true
asciilifeform: this is deeply and profoundly true.
mircea_popescu: my impression of the general truecrypt population is that they're not particularly more secure than average

ezdiy: the more the tunnel vision, the more blind spots for obvious stuff
asciilifeform: optimator: if the virtualization scheme has an escape (or even just leaks info) you're just as fucked
asciilifeform: for instance, AFAIK most x86 virtualization setups leak info through the tlb cache (timing)
optimator: assuming the base has been compromised, or our you suggesting the base could become compromised through a virtualized OS
asciilifeform: the latter.
optimator: how?
asciilifeform: and if you find a fresh one, I do hope you have better sense than to tell us.

mircea_popescu: asciilifeform read on, she catches on.
asciilifeform: wait a sec, this was your camgirl ?
asciilifeform: the very same?
mircea_popescu: "Edit2: I was finally able to log into my account and found an API key with full rights to everything. I never made one, wtf does this mean?"

mircea_popescu: anyway, as you say. mtgox does not talk to yubikey, it talks to teh computor.
asciilifeform: perhaps consumers should be encouraged rather than discouraged in their belief that their pc is alive and is inhabited by devils.
mircea_popescu: i don't think she actually understood before what sessions are and how they work
inhies: boobs
asciilifeform: it is rather like, most people are only vaguely aware that they have livers, until the shot rings out and there is an extra bodily orifice suddenly present.
optimator: asciilifeform: my vote for best laugh tonight
mircea_popescu: imo sessions are this idiocy from hell.
asciilifeform: the whole pc orchestra (incl. but not limited to wintel) is idiocy from hell.
mircea_popescu: yes but this is worse.
mircea_popescu: actually tbh the "logged in" concept, rested on supposed sessionization of a stateless protocol is, imo, the most ridiculous idea of mankind to date.
mircea_popescu: female circumcision makes comparatively a lot more sense.
asciilifeform: but the chumps love it (except when they don't, yes)
optimator: convenience
mircea_popescu: i mean when it was originally introduced it was like... fuck this shit, nobody cares, it's for some blog.
mircea_popescu: "how bad can it get" etc.
asciilifeform: my point, though, is that even if you dispense with the convenience of sessions and go the full-bore "hair shirt" with a paper one-time-pad or whatnot, a compromised machine is still a compromised machine.
mircea_popescu: well... apparently it can get pretty bad.
optimator: wasn't it all? I mean what could go wrong with a local hosts file?
mircea_popescu: very true

mircea_popescu: somebody needs to make a new tcp/ip stack
mircea_popescu: one that crypts natively
mircea_popescu: basically a sort of otr for ip
asciilifeform: on a new machine architecture, that crypts ram/disk natively, and a number of other essentials...
dub: call it bittoken ring
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform yeah
mircea_popescu: ideally your machine would come with a one disk onetimepad
mircea_popescu: 1tb or w/e worth of it.
mod6: that'd be pretty cool
mircea_popescu: throw it out when done
asciilifeform: except that phrasing the problem as a failure to encrypt is misleading
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform no it's not. identity is cryptity.

mircea_popescu: no such thing is possible.
asciilifeform: recall the story by your PR girl?
mircea_popescu: anything pretending to exist outside of a cryptographic identity is living in a state of sin.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform which one ?
optimator: mircea_popescu: trust, you have to start somewhere
mircea_popescu: optimator no but look, the very notion of identity, ie, the possibility to distinguish X from Adam
