discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: awt#1146: Hello from discord.
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: awtho: Hello from ipnoje
signpost[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: hey, new things can happen, but you're probably right.
signpost[asciilifeform]: iirc cold fusion also had early reports of replication that fizzled.
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: awtho: Discord invite link for any who wish to use the channel: https://discord.gg/PxydBEeS
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: s1gnp0st: neato, ty
awt[asciilifeform]: gregorynyssa: you still there?
awt[asciilifeform]: Lol who are you clumpy_lemons?
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: clumpy_lemons: This is lobbes
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: clumpy_lemons: Neato btw
shinohai[asciilifeform]: signpost: Is there a robots.txt file active on yer site or something? Running `wget -R -np http://problematic.site/src/pentacle/` grabs the index file and naught else.
signpost[asciilifeform]: just the default one supplied by wordpress that mentions /wp-admin
signpost[asciilifeform]: maybe I have the wget command goofed
shinohai[asciilifeform]: Ah yeah figured it otu: In readme is capital `R` for recursive when should be `-r`
signpost[asciilifeform]: ah will fix, ty
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: hortulanus#5682: I swear I'm not a bot
asciilifeform: awt: who are these folx? ( where didja post the heathen gateway link ? )
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: hortulanus#5682: I just followed a few links from http://nosuchlabs.com/ and ended up here
asciilifeform: a, from the logs? ok
signpost[asciilifeform]: welcome hortulanus
signpost[asciilifeform] curious now if deedbot will work over this, doubtful as yet.
PeterL[asciilifeform]: does deedbot want the line to start with !! ? having the name probably keeps that from working
signpost[asciilifeform]: yeah. I might look into helping normies register a GPG key so they can eventually peer with someone on pest.
asciilifeform: signpost: didntcha already make this in #a ?
asciilifeform: they can register from there
signpost[asciilifeform]: or perhaps a web dispenser would be more normie-compat
PeterL[asciilifeform]: might have to put in an exception for discord_bridge so it skips to the next :
asciilifeform: even here oughta work if he simply starts line with !! neh
asciilifeform: or hm nm
signpost[asciilifeform]: could be made to, but currently wants nothing before !!
asciilifeform: it oughta pseudo-hearsay rather than printing name
signpost[asciilifeform]: that'd make it work, yep
signpost[asciilifeform] thinks letting n00bs in might be entertaining, even if later it ends up spawning a separate lobby-net
PeterL[asciilifeform]: might give us an opportunity to try out gagging at least?
asciilifeform: PeterL: atm the n00bs seem quite opposite of excessively talkative
signpost[asciilifeform] snorts at "try out gagging"
signpost[asciilifeform]: hortulanus: what brought you to asciilifeform's site? want to introduce yourself?
PeterL[asciilifeform]: hmm, sounded funny to me too after I said it
signpost[asciilifeform]: he probably doesn't see that message since discord highlights use @
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: WillHaack#3379: heya, now i can say hi without vpatching , laziness prevails!
PeterL[asciilifeform]: I don't remember, is # a valid symbol for pest usernames?
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: WillHaack#3379: howdy
asciilifeform: willhaack aha whaack ? ( or 'anuther shakespeare by same name' ? )
PeterL[asciilifeform]: were gonna haveta send out some gpg challenges to make these people verify their claimed ID, neh?
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: WillHaack#3379: yup
signpost[asciilifeform]: better to just consider all bridged messages suspect
asciilifeform: PeterL: easier to actually peer with folx rather than asking'em to sign messages they throw as hearsay
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: WillHaack#3379: _gets nervous_
asciilifeform: btw my station still seems to be peered with whaack's
asciilifeform: so not sure what he's doing in the heathen door
asciilifeform: signpost: all hearsays are equally 'suspect', bridge or not
PeterL[asciilifeform]: right, that's easier
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: WillHaack#3379: I have yet to update pest I guess I don't need to exchange keys again though
signpost[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: yup
PeterL[asciilifeform]: it is a bit confusing that people start lines addressed to specific people "username: ..." but the bridge starts lines coming from people the same way "username: ..."
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: hortulanus#5682: signpost: I first found out about asciilifeform on Scott Locklin's comment section. Just reading through his blog now. Might try to run Pest on my device
asciilifeform: hortulanus#5682: welcome to pestnet!
asciilifeform: hortulanus#5682: see logs if you haven't yet. they're searchable.
PeterL[asciilifeform]: hortulanus#5682: this place? https://scottlocklin.wordpress.com/2023/07/28/death-of-the-physical-library/ << a few years ago I was browsing the CMU library and realized they hadn't gotten any new hard-copy journals since 2008
PeterL[asciilifeform]: (CMU = Central Mich U, not Carnegie Mellon U)
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: hortulanus#5682: PeterL: I've been seeing his comments for a while, that one too
asciilifeform: PeterL: asciilifeform is mildly surprised that they still print hardcopies at all. ( consider, nonpaying customers could read'em ! )
PeterL[asciilifeform]: yeah, I was trying to be a non-paying customer and it certainly stopped me
PeterL[asciilifeform]: Where I work, we've found a nice benefit of hiring college interns is that they can get all the journal articles for free instead of us having to pay for them
asciilifeform: PeterL: how often does your shop actually win from having these articles ? do people still in fact publish e.g. novel synthesis of xyz? or what are they for
PeterL[asciilifeform]: nah, mostly we are getting the articles for the analytical methods. I'd say we actually get a specific article one or two times a year, the rest of the time we can get what we need from the abstract or from articles we don't have to pay for.
PeterL[asciilifeform]: maybe not even that often
asciilifeform: PeterL: asciilifeform was under the notion that classical analytical chem were dead, killed by 'drop it in the hopper and read the printout' instruments, gc/ms etc
asciilifeform: but nope ?
PeterL[asciilifeform]: There are still people publishing interesting things, but there is a lot of fluff
PeterL[asciilifeform]: no, there are sometimes you need to do something more specific to analyze a specific compound, or sometimes there are two very similar analytes that only get separated by treating the in a specific way
asciilifeform: a, interesting
PeterL[asciilifeform]: back when I was doing synthesis, I would have to read a lot more papers, but then my employer was paying for access to all the journals. For synthesis there are a lot more factors to consider, analysis is much more straightforward
signpost[asciilifeform]: PeterL: we're going to need you to personally confirm or reject the lk99 floaty-rocks.
PeterL[asciilifeform]: I'll put it on my to-do list...
asciilifeform: PeterL: does the 'more specific' thing mainly concern distinguishing isomers ? or are there other cases
asciilifeform took 2 semesters of ochem but otherwise a rube
PeterL[asciilifeform]: typically either isomers or otherwise very small differences (like having an ethyl vs methyl on the end)
PeterL[asciilifeform]: Recently I switched to a role in Quality Assurance, so I'm not actually in the lab anymore, I just go through stacks of other people's data to make sure they follow all the rules

gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: (Which is quite sad.)
PeterL[asciilifeform]: You might be from Michigan if "Coast to Coast" means from Port Huron to Muskegon :)
PeterL[asciilifeform]: gregogynssa: Has there ever been a time when someone asked where you were from and you pointed to a spot on your right palm?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/pest/2023-08-04#1029970 << Thanks for pointing this out. That was my first reaction as well.

gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/pest/2023-08-04#1029953 << The answer is no. Usernames must be: A-Z a-z 0-9 plus underscore.
dulapbot: Logged on 2023-08-04 14:04:31 PeterL[asciilifeform]: I don't remember, is # a valid symbol for pest usernames?
PeterL[asciilifeform]: yeah, so the usernames from Discord might need munging of some sort if the BridgeBot is going to post them as hearsay users
PeterL[asciilifeform]: might be less confusing to show the discord user in parentheses like "(username) ..." instead of using the colon "username: ..." ?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/pest/2023-08-04#1030012 << I think that would be better than the hearsay-notation.

gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: The formatting mismatch between Discord and Pest usernames is likely too great for the hearsay-notation to be effective.
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: awtho: Will try parens
discord_bridge[asciilifeform]: (awtho) With parens.
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/pest/2023-08-03#1029895 << possibly, I had a read of this summary the other day, what really stood out to me is that was apparently discovered in 1999 by Sukbae Lee and Ji-Hoon Kim and was put on the back burner before t
