unpx[asciilifeform]: Reading this NSA doc, my eye instantly saw the "radio games" and reading that reminds me of Pest's camouflage
asciilifeform: unpx: the historic term is 'funkspiel'. but has very little to do with pest or protocols in particular ( typically refers to disinfo sent through a captive or turncoat operative )

bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-06-13 17:45:23 awt: The only way I seem to be able to prevent a race condition when handling incoming multipart messages is to space out their transmission a bit. Even moving the processing of text messages on to a single thread didn't help.
awt[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: presumably second pest message processing thread checks order before the first has time to record its message hash in the filter. .1 sec spacing between multiparts prevents it.
asciilifeform: awt: hmm, why does it need to 'check order' at all ?
asciilifeform: (given as the console is nao mutable)
awt[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: to determine whether or not to send a getdata.
asciilifeform: awt: getdata oughta be sent if the antecedent hasn't arrived for $interval
asciilifeform: rather than immed
awt[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: I see.
awt[asciilifeform]: That would likely fix the issue.
asciilifeform: awt: prolly oughta revise A.2.2 'GetDataWait' & related text, re subj
asciilifeform suspects that some large % of getdata reqs are unnecessary (i.e. the desired msg is already in flight)
asciilifeform: awt: re multipart msgs in particular, tho, a guiistic pestron shouldn't need to fully reassemble the thing before displaying
asciilifeform: oughta be able to show the parts as they arrive, with ellipsis where missing
asciilifeform: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-06-14#1027007 << tentatively -- only send getdata for a msg that's been missing for GetDataWait msec. (after which, give it GetDataWait msec to arrive, as described in current pre-draft, etc)

awt[asciilifeform]: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-06-14#1027016 << yes - should be able to just take out the inline getdata send - already implemented GetDataWait in the station under development.
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-06-14 16:56:49 asciilifeform[4]: ^ with getdata's instead of hashes, obv, and advance 'tick' erry GetDataWait msec, etc
phf: getdatas should probably happen as a separate pass on a timer, because it's ultimately for closing holes, rather than actively managing the connection
phf: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/pest/2023-06-14#1027400 << no i'm poor. it was just a getaway

asciilifeform did recently scratch head over the 'where to burn dough before it inflates away' and looked into boatism, was astonished to see that prices not kept up w/ inflatola. but then thought 'when the fuck will go on that boat, it'll sink in the dock like sov subs in '90s', lol
phf: well, you can take classes there, and there are some dinghy rentals that you can't get much places else. like you can get a dinghy with a gunter rig
asciilifeform: aha, saw sailboat rentals/tutorings advertised there
dulapbot: Logged on 2023-06-14 19:03:01 asciilifeform: did recently scratch head over the 'where to burn dough before it inflates away' and looked into boatism, was astonished to see that prices not kept up w/ inflatola. but then thought 'when the fuck will go on that boat, it'll sink in the dock like sov subs in '90s', lol
phf: i'm unconvinced that a boat purchase is a good idea for similar reasons. i'm sort of old enough to realize that i'm never going to have that Purple Noon lifestyle,
asciilifeform: it could be good idea, for folx w/ time to actually sail on the boat
asciilifeform: in the exact same way as phf's horse etc
phf: right
phf: well, from that perspective buying a sail boat is kind of like buying a well trained horse with a pedigree before you even know you want to ride
asciilifeform: ditto airplanes etc
asciilifeform: ( they're toys for aristocrats, i.e. folx with time. )
phf: there's probably some people who can afford that sort of careless splurge but i'm not one of them. my horses are squirely in the 10k range, which got me thinking that if i really want to sail, as a summer recreation, i might as well buy a dinghy, with a proper sailing rig
phf: as opposed to buying aspirational, for when i take my ship to mediteranian sea. what i really want is something i can throw on the roof of the car, and then drop onto any lake by myself, rig it up, and spend 2-3 hours enjoying it. anything bigger will be an overkill
asciilifeform in fact not knew even approx what horse costs, is surprised that only 10k (tho imagine you gotta pay somebody to warehouse it)
phf: horse cost is pedigree, confirmation and training. and then of course you have the auction prices, which is when a 10k horse gets sold for 30k because two people fell in love with it
phf: but you can get a horse with a pedigree and decent confirmation for peanuts, 3-4k, 1-2k for basic training, etc.
asciilifeform ran outta 'toys' to buy that can be installed indoors / on site. but most errything else reqs 'copious free time' & typically also time to get to/from
phf: it doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. prices start going up and steep when it's a pedigree that you want (e.g. racing horse and you want it to race), and particular confirmation that you need (e.g. racing horse gotta be built like one), and training (which is astronomical for a racing horse)
asciilifeform: right, the realization was that it aint the race horse / plane / boat / etc. that costs, but the time away from console
phf: correct
phf: again, you can get a 15 foot dinghy with some non-trivial sail rig, for ~10k or so. now go enjoy
asciilifeform: ( e.g. asciilifeform last yr went to beach, for 1st time in some yrs, it 'cost' considerably moar than the auction horse in above example , sadly )
phf: you spent 30k to go to the beach? man, hanging out with mp gave you some expensive tastes
asciilifeform: 'spent'
phf: oh in a sense of opportunity cost
phf: well, i'm not psychopathic or possibly driven enough to think of it in those terms
asciilifeform imagines that this is also how traditional prostitution worx -- 'i'ma do this for a while' 'temporarily'
asciilifeform: then 'temporarily' turns into yr, then 2, etc
phf: i guess question is what's the end goal. i can see why mp "worked", which he presumably did at some point, because clear payoff. can also see why ceo of nvidia works. not so much your average run of the mill corpo
phf: my income in $$$ grew just as its buying power plummeted, i sort of outpaced this plummet, but just barely to make a few steps forward overall. might as well ride horses/sail dinghys
asciilifeform not has the kinda gig where a realistic 'end goal' appears. doing it largely to pile up moar emergency battery for the inevitable 'may take 6mo-yr to find new one when this one kaput'
phf: work to so that one can look presentable in a coffin :p
asciilifeform: precisely
