I feel like i'd ruin them quite quickly
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: doing e.g. welding/grinding.
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2022-08-29 18:33:25 billymg: crtdaydreams: can confirm, wolverine boots are great. i've got three pairs of these i bought in ny after a coworker got me into the trend

crtdaydreams[asciilifeform] ought to seperate use-cases in this instance between more trade-work and daily drivers / yard work
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: prolly should also mention have worn mostly running shoes entire life due to school requirement being that
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform] just attempted to measure foot size by using measuring tape, apparently indicating foot is 42.5cm long
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: jezus that's a long foot xd
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: apparently sizing only goes up to 30.2mm

crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: ohaiyo shinohai o/
shinohai[asciilifeform]: Heya crtdaydreams how goes?
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: shinohai: not going. broke a machine this afternoon and have to get out the oxy-acetylene tomorrow morn. gotta straighten a roller D:
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: so a bit grumpy about that, just had dinner and prolly head to bed shortly. how about you?
shinohai[asciilifeform]: Not too bad here, waiting on the espresso to finish, then gonna tinker with blatta a bit more probably.
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: shinohai one of those cup ones or grinder?
shinohai[asciilifeform]: If by cups you mean those coffee pods, ewwwww.
PeterL[asciilifeform]: crtdaydreams: they may look like dress boots at first, but if you use them that goes away pretty fast. If they are built right, you don't have to worry about ruining them.

phf[asciilifeform]: either way you want to take care of them, i usually clean mine with dry brush, and then wipe with a rag and mink oil (leather boot stores sell "care" packages)
phf[asciilifeform]: the damage on your work boots will accumulate and they won't look dressy (though if you really want to spend time on it, you can buff out even deep scruffs), but i think it's proper to touch them up on the regular
PeterL[asciilifeform]: phf: you are right about using them as dress shoes. Like I said, I'm pretty gentle with mine. They are something like 9 years old, but I wear them to church every week and don't feel out of place
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2022-08-30 08:57:29 phf[awt]: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2022-08-30#1011867 << what peterl said, but more specifically leather is choose your own adventure. if you use them as dress shoes they'll retain their luster, but if you use them as trade shoes they'll break in pretty fast
phf[asciilifeform]: or better yet 3, 1 pair of dress boots and 2 pairs of daily work boots that you rotate daily
asciilifeform: + 1 for parade, wainot
phf[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform, lots of men engage in social obligations, where they use clothing to signal respect and establish social cohesion. wearing the same milspec army surplus gear everywhere is often seen as deviant behavior!
asciilifeform: phf: noshit. even asciilifeform has parade boots
asciilifeform not worn parade uniform for rather loong time tho
phf[asciilifeform]: i remember der weiße engel from marathon man, but apparently it was joseph mengele's nickname. went to wikipedia article, and it's pure gold. from “Talk” page “ It's true the book has no footnotes or bibliography. But Alan Levy was an award-winning journalist and editor-in-chief of The Prague Post, so I don't person
phf[asciilifeform]: ally have a problem with this source.”
phf[asciilifeform]: “Main photo should remove military uniforms that show a prideful Mengele in Nazi clothes. The man is a war criminal and the photo is not victim centric. A disgraced photo of him on the run is more suitable.”
asciilifeform recalls the hand-drawn 'playing cards' from '17 moments of spring'
phf[asciilifeform]: tbh, i haven't rewatched it since the 90s, what's the reference?
phf[asciilifeform]: fuck, i now have soundtrack stuck in my head
phf[asciilifeform]: for the log reader, obv, for any other scion of su, like asciilifeform, there's no need for a reminder
phf[asciilifeform]: that's a cool scene, i haven't seen it done anywhere else, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMWkTOJxbyA the plot line is that the main character, a spy, gets a meeting with his wife, which involves them seeting at the opposite ends of some random cafe, he alone, and she with a cover date, and periodically looking at each ot
phf[asciilifeform]: her meaningfully, which is still too risky
phf[asciilifeform]: a scene like that would not even be attempted for modern audience, but i wonder if the likes of humphrey bogart have it somewhere in his repertoire
asciilifeform: phf: reportedly it nearly got cut in production, director fought tooth'n'nail to keep it

billymg[asciilifeform]: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2022-08-29#1011861 << lol same thing happened to me from wearing nothing but flip flops in cr. i've seen these mentioned before (made to order work/dress boots), if i lived in the US i'd give them a try

billymg[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: what's doubly painful about that one is that the slow decline in btc balance visible in the chart is them dumping 2% annually as their "management fee"
billymg[asciilifeform]: trading currently at a ~32% discount relative to btc spot price
asciilifeform: billymg: considering that the ~whole point! of such schemes is to dampen btc...
signpost[asciilifeform]: at this point the dampening scheme appears to apply to every fake asset, whether discussing goxbtc or gox401k
signpost[asciilifeform]: gotta restart the game back at the bottom
signpost[asciilifeform]: fake assets I said though, not fake currencies
signpost[asciilifeform]: the fake currency has to be strong for the buying the banker fucks are going to be doing somewhere in the next 6-12mos
signpost[asciilifeform]: awt: what do you think the interest rate cut excuse is going to be?

crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: unrelated query; what microcontrollers would folx around here rec?
asciilifeform: crtdaydreams: for what ?
asciilifeform: this is rather like asking 'what diesel motors would folx around here rec?'
asciilifeform: ... for wat? for bulldozer? dump truck? freighter? uboat? answr will vary
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform] knew would get this response
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: voltage monitoring and LED driving
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: voltage will prolly be in AC, but a bridge rectifier and cap should handle that
asciilifeform: pick sumthing you're comfortable with in re instr set (or if lazy, sumthing gcc targets)
asciilifeform: if yer building a 1-off to use on own desk, rather than mass production, cost dun matter at all
asciilifeform: (an 'expensive' micro is still usually < 10 $ )
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: problem is I don't have any experience with any microcontrollers
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: this is sorta a project that I've been meaning to do and would be good to learn some more of electronics
asciilifeform: crtdaydreams: take e.g. this one, marketed to abject n00bs, has pretty good library for commonplace situations and virtually efforless toolchain setup
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: I get the principles and have The art of electronics on standby if need be
bitbot[asciilifeform]: (asciilifeform) 2021-07-09 asciilifeform: thestringpuller: i dun have anyffin against it, there are at least 3 controlling various mechanisms in asciilifeform's torture room, it's a cheap rubbish board
asciilifeform: comes on a breakout board with screw contacts
asciilifeform: *effortless
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform] unsure which arduino board in reference ther
asciilifeform: 'arduino' has reputation of 'unsportsmanlike, for lamers' etc, but if yer problem consists of 'i wanna close a relay contact when voltage so-and-so' it'll do the job and you can bake it and fughet about it
asciilifeform: crtdaydreams: for that one used a 'Micro Beetle ATmega32u4'
asciilifeform: little keychain thing
asciilifeform: chinesium
asciilifeform: working fine for ~2y nao, 24/7 tho
asciilifeform needed strictly to send 4 different strings at 9600 baud when 1 of 4 respective buttons hit
asciilifeform: took maybe hour to bake, and most of it went for drilling holes for the buttons & spraypainting the box
asciilifeform: for a 1-off ? sure
asciilifeform: the box you'll put it in will likely cost moar
asciilifeform: crtdaydreams: typically you can buy sumthing arduinoish locally tho, if not necessarily in the keychain form factor
asciilifeform: if it aint particularly important what physical dimensions, simply buy cheapest local thing
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2022-08-30#1011982 << is the contrary considered "glue 6502 to to pcb and design own data bus w/ 4 eeprom"?

asciilifeform: crtdaydreams: not necessarily, most commercial products with micros, where unit cost actually matters, use 'smallest that'll do the job' and programmed in asm
asciilifeform: even the venarable pic16x84 ( asciilifeform's 1st micro, '90s) is still produced afaik
asciilifeform has seen it in e.g. cheap mice
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: 1c makes a dent when you're churning out 1,000,000+ shitblocks
asciilifeform: *venerable
crtdaydreams[asciilifeform]: wasn't aware they came in smaller packages
asciilifeform: 'arduino' is simply a software kit on top of 'atmel' (can program it in asm if prefer)
asciilifeform: comes in over9000 sizes
