gregorynyssa: meanwhile, there is a minor tradition within the Episcopal Church of using academic pronunciation, of the sort which would be found in Wheelock's textbook.
gregorynyssa: personally I have been reluctant to stand for either. I ended up creating my own pronunciation-scheme based on reconstructions of Late Latin.
gregorynyssa: among other features, the short U's are almost schwas like in English, and C at the end of syllables is pronounced like harsh H.
gregorynyssa: it is how I imagine St Augustine to have spoken.
gregorynyssa: unlike academic pronunciation (but like Italianate pronunciation) it is possible to speak very quickly in this manner.
gregorynyssa: because the stress and the vowel-quantities are largely harmonized rather than separately construed.
