adlai: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-03-15#1033281 << maybe? all I recall is 'toughbook', and how the thing looked, not which corp owned the OEM
snsabot: Logged on 2021-03-15 13:23:56 asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-03-13#1033210 << toshiba ? i recall a u.s. army grunt reminiscing re: playing 'call of duty: iraq' in... iraq, on such a box
adlai: was a laptop+touchscreen chimera that was usable (with stylus) thru mm of dusty mist
adlai: ofc, had no clitmouse, and the trackpad made officers sad and angry and then call in some enlisted shmuck to drive the laptop instead of them
adlai: touchscreen was a nice gimmick although nobody used it much after they realised how useless touchscreens are
adlai: at least, when the software behind it is braindead enough that you can't tandem the touchscreen and trackpad as coarse+fine location, because any touchscreen stimulus causes e.g. panning of the map
adlai has never used non-braindead military software, can't attest re: those kinds!
adlai: don't get me started on the kitchens, though
adlai: if there is one thing the IDF knows how to build, it is a bitchin kitchin
adlai: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-03-15#1033277 << SOP in guitar world, and they then get paid by the manufacturers to have their name associated with the published design
snsabot: Logged on 2021-03-15 11:58:35 asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-03-13#1033193 << i rec to recall that at one time, serious violinists often had the instruments made to order
adlai: trouble with "violin" is that virtuoso musical instruments are a fixed form-factor, and the world of performing composed music would recoil in horror at the idea of the Nth-century Theremin, no matter how beautiful it sounds compared to the screeching of the previous one
snsabot: Logged on 2021-03-15 11:58:35 snsabot: Logged on 2021-03-13 02:19:14 adlai: fwiw, the more I mull over the parallels between the various strengths and shortcomings of the different input methods, and those of prototypes that have had less commercialised progeny, the less I find the name "Engelbart's Violin" appropriate.
adlai has no idea what a better name is, yet; few if any kinds of technology that existed before the yet-unrealised possibility of 'computronium' were designed with the possibility of such ever existing
adlai: tbh the closest might be programmable looms.
