asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-02-26#1032510 << the issue is that there is NO POSSIBILITY of encrypting handshakes or seq #s in tcp (other than by tunneling via an actually-encryptable protocol on top of udp...)
snsabot: Logged on 2021-02-26 21:58:24 verisimilitude: Criticizing TCP for ``plaintext sequence numbers'' is unreasonable; the entirety of it is unencrypted; an old extension even has packet security levels such as ``top secret'', for controlling transmission in ``high-security'' networks.
asciilifeform: and, likewise, tcp offers no possibility of authentication for handshakes. which is why ddos is possible (tcp needs memory for state, and anyone can come and demand some, and it'll be given, until machine chokes) and why 3rd parties can RST your connection
asciilifeform: ...aaand aside from the epic braindamage of the protocol per se, there is an entire galaxy of braindamage in ~its implementation~ as well.
snsabot: Logged on 2020-07-29 12:24:06 asciilifeform: trinque: tcp -- and in particular, the standard stack for it -- per se, is (as discussed prev.) a quite sad kludge. for instance i still dunget why there's any trace of a socket left after process terminates in linuxen, for there to later 'socket in use'
verisimilitude: I read of a twenty-seven or so year old bug that was fixed in the Linux TCP lately.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: this one ?
verisimilitude: I found it amusing how an inspectable system, such as a Lisp Machine, would've made finding the flaw easier. They pretend they needn't pay the debugging costs, and pay far more when they do anyway.
verisimilitude: It would be reasonable to have a system not able to be debugged, were it proven correct, but they don't do that either.
asciilifeform: verisimilitude: it aint like the pedigreed morons ( + nsa stooges ) on that (or any other) committee are made to pay when yours or mine system melts down from their 1970s idiocy
shinohai: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-02-26#1032507 <<< still was unable to find peer after leaving open overnite, so guessing gonna hafta try from "seedbox" server when I have chance.
snsabot: Logged on 2021-02-26 21:26:14 asciilifeform: shinohai: the 1 on lulazon took almost 30m to find the peers
asciilifeform: shinohai: fwiw it ate whole thing overnight, and seeding nao (grand total of 3 seed boxes on asciilifeform's end)
shinohai: Nice!
asciilifeform: well apparently did not suffice for shinohai...
shinohai: I suspect it's simply my torrent client, or isp filtering. Gonna try with transmission but still havent had time to do ebuild on remote server yet.
shinohai: Well now I'm properly stumped. Can torrent random file from PirateBay in minutes here locally AND on dedicated box. Just not *this* torrent.
verisimilitude: The honey pots are always open.
shinohai: troo
shinohai: Seedbox is good enuf to actually stream videos from torrents w/out download on my toilet laptop
dpb: it's working great for me, eta is now a few days rather than a month
dpb: pipe shenanegans confirmed, i'd say
dpb: i was getting as much as a megabyte down from the amazon box, while dulap is a constant dialup speed
trinque would not be surprised at a patchwork of differing "QoS" rules depending on route
asciilifeform: trinque: to date tested various destinations vs. current dulap, on both sides of ocean; not encountered 'constant dialup' w/ any
asciilifeform: my working hypothesis re dpb's observations is still this one.
snsabot: Logged on 2021-02-26 21:23:17 asciilifeform: dpb: ftr i suspect that it aint yer dish, per se, that has insufficient bw -- but the upstream link. among the sadder isp in usa there is a trend of let's cache youtube et al, it's 98% of usage anyway, while leave pittance for actual net traffic
asciilifeform: ftr dulap -> lulazon full transfer (~260G) took ~11h.
asciilifeform: i can't resist to ask, dpb , whatcha doing w/ a dish ? are on boat, in the sea ?
asciilifeform: ftr 1 of my seed boxen is on a symmetric Gb/s pipe , from which served quite successfully warez for aeons. and dpb's client pulling ~0 (100-200k/s sporadically, at 30-40s intervals) from it
asciilifeform: trinque: try grabbing the torrent an' see what you get
dpb: dish is best option currently. other option is cellular
trinque: asciilifeform: currently pulling approx 3.6MB/s
