thimbronion: BingoBoingo: when you're looking for a particular Trilema piece, how do you find it?
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: Usually hitting google with: site:trilema.com what I am looking for
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: same here.
BingoBoingo: Which one are you looking for?
thimbronion: None in particular at the moment. But I was thinking about the idea of creating a blog search bot that indexes Trilema and other ex-republican blogs.
thimbronion: Since Google becomes more useless by the day.
BingoBoingo: IIrc, it was a subject that come up occasionally in the former forum. "What would search engine look like
thimbronion: I suspect search in the context of the WoT was also discussed.
BingoBoingo: iirc, an idea floating about was pre-turd google style pagerank with trusted seeds
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: I'm not sure what you mean by seeds? Sites to start crawling from?
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: crawling per se always struck me as barbaric. i can see how it aint avoidable for rando www, but why not civilized folx put search mechanism on own www ?
asciilifeform: people think 'search -- expensive' , but being crawled is 9000x moar expensive. esp. when it happens again, again, ..., again, 4evah, by 9000 bots..
asciilifeform: and the orthogonal bonus of having search knob, is that you can see wtf folx are searching for. whereas if your only means of being searchable is getting crawled, then nope
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Well, what happens when the problem isn't one particular site but several hosted on different machines
asciilifeform: imho the correct way to implement search among folx who actually can agree on something, is standardized search knob, rather than crawl
thimbronion: asciilifeform: do you think mp would incorporate such a knob?
asciilifeform: thimbronion: i did say 'who can agree', neh
thimbronion: asciilifeform: I suspect he would not. I do agree though that a knob would be idea.
asciilifeform: there are prolly other people who don't want to be searchable.
thimbronion: asciilifeform: but if I can't search early to mid english Trilema then I would be unsatisfied.
thimbronion: *ideal.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: back when i regularly searched it, simply maintained local copy
asciilifeform: ( iirc is actually how he preferred it to be done. thing was wget'able even back when had the paywall thing, i can only assume deliberately )
thimbronion: asciilifeform: I attempted to download the whole thing once but failed.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: possibly since changed his config. i've nfi, it's been a while.
thimbronion: asciilifeform: My script was perhaps weak/flawed, but I let it run for a *while* and don't think I made it through the romanian pieces.
thimbronion: *Rumanian.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: have you tried not leeching the photos ?
thimbronion: asciilifeform: no
asciilifeform: thimbronion: iirc he put in boobytraps coupla yrs ago to control bw hogs. but i'm not up to date on subj.
