BingoBoingo: thimbronion: tyvm for these lulz
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: my pleasure
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: You've got an eye for this "Chinese Ownership Of California" beat
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: It's really palpable around here
diana_coman: ahaha, thimbronion will end up "going to China" while staying in California?
BingoBoingo: It wasn't particularly so in the Middle West outside of University campuses. I've noticed here in Montevideo a substantial increase in the number of east asian faces out and about in my barrio.
thimbronion: There have been weeks were I was speaking more Chinese than english recently
diana_coman: let China come to you! it's cheaper!
BingoBoingo: There's been a slow increase since I first arrived centered around the "World Trade Center" campus, but since this new cold came around...
diana_coman: thimbronion: from what I see, the Qntra-contributions are actually working quite well for you; is this correct?
thimbronion: diana_coman: yes, I agree.
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: I even met a few at the immigration office in CR.
diana_coman: thimbronion: do you plan then to take BingoBoingo's full course for Qntra?
thimbronion: diana_coman: I have lost the link to what that course entails, but if it will help improve my stories I'll take it.
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: Essentially the course entails continuing to do what we've been doing with an increasing eye to sharpening your reporting.
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: Ok I'm up for that.
diana_coman: thimbronion: does that answer not strike you in any way as idiotic?
diana_coman: you've lost the link (and no link can ever be found either, good god) ; and if it will help - someone else is supposed to tell you if it will help? gah
diana_coman: BingoBoingo: if you take him on that course, do make sure he actually does more work on it than you because seriously, you have not just one full plate to gobble up but several.
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: http://qntra.net/archives/ and http://bingology.net/archives/ are links to keep handing. the first has all the qntra posts. The second, all my blog posts.
BingoBoingo: diana_coman: Alright.
thimbronion: diana_coman: "if it will help" came from the fact that I've already been taking instruction from BingoBoingo, as he mentioned. So I could have written that more clearly as "I'm not sure how it would be different from what's already happening."
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: For some homework this weekend: You've accumulated four publications on Qntra so far. I would like you to put together an article on your blog addressing what, in your eyes, makes each of the stories compelling.
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: will do.
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: The difference, as I see it between the informal way we've been handling things so far and taking the full course, is in the commitment. Thus far we've been trying things out, testing for fit. In pursuing the course you are commiting to wrestle with the aspects of journalism outlined there.
diana_coman: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^6
diana_coman will leave it to BingoBoingo before she ends up thoroughly mad at thimbronion
BingoBoingo: I'm not qualified to try sharpening you all around, but I can help your wrestle with these particular things in your writing and reporting.
thimbronion: BingoBoingo: Ok. understood. I look forward to wrestling with the topics outlined in the Proposal.
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: You've got an eye for a certain kind of story, so the next step is trying to look for these things that catch your interest in other stories.
thimbronion: That's been a question on my mind. I currently rely on basically random inspiration hitting me when reading some link.
BingoBoingo: Well, as you go over the stories consider: "Who, What, Where/When, and why "Why" needs to be discounted."
BingoBoingo: Not every type of "Why" needs discounted, but the dangerous sort the materializes in reading between the lines is a tempting sort of danger that has got to be resisted.
thimbronion: I'm not quite sure what you mean be discounted here - does that mean weighted less?
BingoBoingo: thimbronion: Well, knowing the "why" behind someone else's actions... It can seem obvious, but certainty is evasive.
thimbronion: Aha yes, I get it.
thimbronion: Why is subjective.
BingoBoingo: It's hard to debug other people's internal states. Why can indeed be objective, but distinguishing that from subjective projections of "why"... are hard to discern.
BingoBoingo: If a machine fails, or a bridge collapses, why can be obvious. Failure to maintain, etc. The next level, why the failure to maintain happened...
