mircea_popescu: BingoBoingo lelz
Framedragger: news from vc, the cockmail and cockbox guy: https://vc.gg/blog/so-its-been-a-while.html
mircea_popescu: yea he kinda disappeared did he
mircea_popescu: sadly his page doesn't load.
mircea_popescu: https://archive.is/0jncM << the imaginary "america" in which rolling stone mag is still a thing, wounded most grievously.
mircea_popescu: it's kind of funny to watch unintelligent narcissists observe their solipsist bubble popping. "oh the thing that didn't exist didn't exist and the random element which happened to pop it IS TO BLAME"
mircea_popescu: totally. it's not like "america" in the swj sense hasn't ever existed ; nor that rolling stone stopped mattering about the time mtv started airing. no, no, it's just that trump, thirty fucking years late to the party, "ruined" "things". what things ? the things hacks squatting an abandoned trade magazine hallucinated & confabulated into being, those things!
Framedragger: re. vc blog, he's using a let's encrypt cert, and archive.is doesn't seem to like that cert also. :/
mircea_popescu: sucks for him i guess.
mircea_popescu: but hey, people may choose to go offline for all sorts of reasons.
mircea_popescu: how the fuck they manage to go through that lengthy opus on "constitutional violations" without for a second stopping to point out that the ONLY reason this is possible is because THEY forced an idiot into the office because he happened to be mulatto is anyone's guess. seriously, nobody over at rolling stone notices this ? eight years of bahamas pissing on the constitution is what allows everyone else now to do the same ?
Framedragger: (rehosted that particular post of his here: http://fd.mkj.lt/stuff/vc-21-jan-2017.html i don't think he'll mind. apparently he took a vacation after they seized his equipment)
mircea_popescu: i kinda lost interest myself.
BingoBoingo: lol @ rogue pineapple
BingoBoingo: Sago palms have that effect
mircea_popescu: aha. pretty cool huh
mircea_popescu: dude these "responsive" web 2.0 ajax site are a sad display.
mircea_popescu: quora page has been loading for > 20 seconds now, doing half a dozen post requests in tyhe process. what the fuck hayseeds must one have for brains to do a POST on page load holy shit, just build your pages correctly, there's absolutely no reason any webpage has to post without user interaction.
mircea_popescu: 1.2mb css file. really ? 200kb FONT. not fonts. one. it loads multiple. why the fuck ?
Framedragger: quora is ~cancer in my books, and i have higher tolerance level than say alf. so that tells ya something :D but seriously, quora is a ridiculous site run by a ridiculous "company". to quote maciej / idlewords, "Quora's declared competitor is Wikipedia, a free site that not only doesn't make revenue, but loses so much money they have to ask for donations just to be broke. Recently, Quora raised $80 million in new funding at a $900 milli
Framedragger: "on in new funding at a $900 million valuation. Their stated reason for taking the money was to postpone having to think about revenue. "
Framedragger: "Quora walked in to an investor meeting, stated these facts as plainly as I have, and walked out with a check for eighty million dollars. That's the power of investor storytime. "
mircea_popescu: i'm clubbing them one in current piece, also.
Framedragger: hey mircea_popescu, you still got a bunch of ipv4 addresses available? are they under a single /16? i may be interested in purchasing/leasing them from you for a non-tmsr related project
Framedragger: (ideally they'd be scattered around, not under single block)
mircea_popescu: how does this make sense ?
Framedragger: if by chance you actually 'own' them in the sense of having your contact info there in ripe db, they can be 'transferred'. i haven't done it before tho so may be talking nonsense?
Framedragger: ah, maybe you just have some addresses under some hosting provider account?
mircea_popescu: yes but i don't particularly want money nor am i interested in supporting non-tmsr anything. so there's no upside for me whatsoever.
Framedragger: ah, i laboured under the assumption that small money is still money :p yeah i understand.
Framedragger wonders if can relate project to tmsr interests somehow
mircea_popescu: lmao what an approach
Framedragger: (project is to build a 'roboadvisor' for real estate. use past real estate purchase price data to build time series, also use near-realtime rental data, combine all into a training set for a model which predicts what's worth to invest in. (not my project idea but i'll be doing some dev work for it.) will need to scrape things which don't particularly like to be scraped. need addresses. "make real estate more transparent")
Framedragger: (interestingly enough, very little movement in this area. not that i believe in "we'll disrupt the whole industri!!!" startupy nonsense.)
mircea_popescu: so talk to the spammers, buy a server farm setup with a few dozen ips and use it for your purpose purpose. as you won't get blacklisted nobody will give a shit. bout $50/ip/month is where the market is now, can readily bill your employer triple and if he won't pay ditch him on the spot.
Framedragger: that's good advice, thank you :)
deedbot: http://trilema.com/2017/global-warming-on-triton/ << Trilema - Global Warming on Triton
adlai: Framedragger: uh, you're talking to mp, not some l2 shmuck who just self-ups for random retorts. small money flows in one direction only, afaict.
Framedragger: well, maybe he treats his ipv4 assets the same way he treats outstanding paypal cents, i.e. something he may prefer to get rid of. :) but that was an uninformed assumption of mine
mircea_popescu: !!up indiancandy
deedbot: indiancandy voiced for 30 minutes.
indiancandy: hey mp
mircea_popescu: how goes
shinohai: hiya indiancandy
shinohai: busy! >.>
mircea_popescu: lol is she avoiding you nao ?
mircea_popescu: idly going through older trilemas we come upon http://trilema.com/2014/agency-and-other-notes/#selection-181.0-178.2 wherein mp predicts "go doesn't have a decade left in it", in 2014.
shinohai: she likes skype instead of irc
mircea_popescu installed king's bounty. anyone played that ? (katauri interactive)
BingoBoingo: lol, the butt stretch reverses https://archive.is/oWc52
BingoBoingo: "He said Bill Clinton “sold us out with that NAFTA crap.” He said George W. Bush had “f----d us good.” He said Obama’s eight years “sucked.” He called Hillary Clinton “a mean ol’ heifer.”"
BingoBoingo: “It’ll be turmoil for four years. He’s like a firecracker in a keg of dynamite.”
BingoBoingo: "Why, then, I wondered, did he vote for him?"
BingoBoingo: "He put down his brandy in a plastic cup and looked at me."
BingoBoingo: “Why not?” he said flatly. “Let it blow.”
phf: these fucking people. so i've been traveling through red states past two years, and the sentiment was ~very~ clear. north carolina, south carolina, alaska, ohio, pennsylvania. shit, every other uber driver told me the same thing
phf: i can kind of grok how my bethesda, maryland acquaintances didn't see it coming, but you live next door to blue collars, and you can't see it?
phf: "they don't come here" "we don't go there"
phf: BingoBoingo's article
BingoBoingo: phf well Facebook causes such blindness
mircea_popescu: "i always only read text that agrees with me"
mircea_popescu: "surprisingly, this comes at a cost"
