mircea_popescu: so apparently turkey's burning up
mircea_popescu: $google buca fire
deedbot: http://www.lakecountrynow.com/news/oconomowocfocus/fire-damages-buca-building-b99721667z1-378648741.html << Fire damages Buca restaurant in Oconomowoc | https://www.rt.com/news/353034-turkey-nato-base-fire/ << Huge fire breaks out near NATO base in Turkey (PHOTOS, VIDEO ... | http://www.lakecountrynow.com/blogsold/staffblogsold/378548866.html << Fire Department on scene at Buca restaurant in Oconomwooc
mod6: oh hey
mod6: this is even a bit easier than i thought, looks like uudecode will just take the whole ball of wax and parse out the base64 part on its own:
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> so apparently turkey's burning up << yeah saw that.
mod6: so anyway, i'll prepare the rest of these as well as a more refined disclaimer. clearsign them, and pass 'em around for some testing.
BingoBoingo: More or less burning than California?
mod6: once we're happy with what they look like, we can deedbot 'em.
mircea_popescu: mod6 that's the idea yes
mod6: ok :]
mircea_popescu: BingoBoingo well, about same i guess.
BingoBoingo: Well, in California they had to ground the bucket drop planes due to smoke
BingoBoingo: Meanwhile here in the Middle West we are solidly in neither drought nor flood. June teased a drought, but storms have regularly been dropping 1-4 inches of rain at a time.
mod6: yeah, was an absolute blazer up here last week. but starting saturday, quite a bit of rain.
BingoBoingo: My grass put on about 8 inches of height in a week. Was fun mowing yesterday.
mod6: mine grew a lot too. i did harvest a few pickling cucumbers today. at least enough for two Kerr jars worth.
mod6: gonna try doing some refridgerator pickles first. will "can" a few probably when i get a few more... excited to try this out
mircea_popescu: how do you do them ? vinegar ? proper salt pickles ?
BingoBoingo: The pattypan squash has completely recovered from the setback it suffered earlier this month when some (ra)coons completely pulled it out of the ground.
mod6: Also turns out that my romaine lettuce had "bolted" which is why it grew so high. got a bit of a bitter taste to it. this bolting process is basically when it's ready to flower, sometimes because of stress. so i cut 'em down.
mircea_popescu: yeah bolting's bad.
mod6: will replant later this summer in hopes of a fall harvest before the frost starts.
mod6: yea, had no clue about bolting. learning as I go kinda :/
BingoBoingo: bolting sucks
mod6: i did eat quite a bit of it before it shot up though. so that was pretty cool.
BingoBoingo: Well, now you know you gotta get some shadecloth.
mod6: yeah, I think that's a decent idea.
mod6: oh harvested some tomatoes too -- one roma and ~10 cherry ones.
mod6: those turned out good. only have 9 plants this year, as opposed to last years 22.
mod6: so already feels like a lot less.
BingoBoingo: Shade cloth and its cousin bird netting are the sort of magic that makes one the sort of gardener the neighbors envy.
mod6: Yeah, i need that for sure. I also need to build better trellises or something for the cucumbers & other vines. And probably better boxes for some of things.
mod6: Fuckin rabbits ate the shit out of my zuccs.
BingoBoingo: Gotta lay down some cayanne on those things.
BingoBoingo: The first time mammals show interest in a plant you gotta shut that shit down. Black pepper around the perimeter as a warning and Cayenne pepper on the plant to protect it.
mod6: oh does that do the trick?
BingoBoingo: yes, but needs refershed periodically.
mod6: thanks for the tip
mircea_popescu: pepper more expensive than buying the crop lol
mircea_popescu: maybe train your cat to decapitate rabbits ?
BingoBoingo: These two ingredients are bundled together as "critter ridder" but cheaper at food mart.
BingoBoingo: <mircea_popescu> pepper more expensive than buying the crop lol << American bulk "pepper" works for this purpose
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> maybe train your cat to decapitate rabbits ? << dog gets a bunch. but apparently not enough.
BingoBoingo: sheap as shit.
mod6: Get your late-night gardening tips, right here at TMSR.
mircea_popescu: actually knew a gal that started trying to make a garden, but she was a ways off from my house and 10 feet from the forest. so rabbits came wiped it EVERY NIGHT. so she put in traps.
mircea_popescu: ended up farming rabbits.
BingoBoingo: lolololololol
mircea_popescu: for srs.
mod6: oooh, not bad!
mircea_popescu: she'd end up capturing males and fermales in the same box,
mircea_popescu: didn\t know what to do with them. but the rabbits DID know.
mircea_popescu: so next i went by she was all like " don't you want some rabbit ?"
mircea_popescu: "it's great as a steak... or in stu... or in... and she kept getting yellower as she went.
mircea_popescu: bitch ate nothing but rabbit for like two weeks lol
mod6: lol
BingoBoingo: Not a bad fate
mircea_popescu: eventually it was "just take some fucking rabbits!"
mircea_popescu: so i did, but i was too lazy to skin them, so i let them go.
mod6: people say not to eat the rabbits around here because of all the lawn fertilizers and things. not sure if that's accurate or not.
BingoBoingo has lots of local rabbits. They tend to keep to the clover.
mircea_popescu: IN the forest.
BingoBoingo: mod6: Open a few up and check the livers
mod6: haha. she probably trapped 'em again.
mod6: oh huh, what do i look for? just some fatty deposits or some sort of cirrohsis<sp>?
BingoBoingo: unhealth
mircea_popescu: if the liver's normal the meat should be fine. if the liver's enlarged, or off color, throw the carcass out.
mircea_popescu: you won't likely see fat islands, that's for farm fed.
mod6: During the cleaning process, be sure to wear gloves, and hunters should examine the external surfaces of the rabbit for any infected areas. ALWAYS check the liver for the appearance of white or yellow spots.
mircea_popescu: then-butchered liver is always exactly the same. after a few you learn to tell.
mod6: Aight, next few that I get from the dog, will check 'em out.
mircea_popescu: bu the gloves are a good idea, for anthrax mostly. don't cut yourself.
BingoBoingo: Remember not to skimp on the gloves. Rabbits can carry some nasty bacterial diseases
BingoBoingo: Not just the anthrax
mircea_popescu: get those fucking fine steel mesh rubbered, pro gloves.
mod6: yeah, i got a few boxes of latex ones around the house.
mod6: or maybe they're not latex .. whatever they use these days.
mircea_popescu: there's this almost tyre-like glove for butchers.
BingoBoingo: At least go for nitrile gloves designed for cleaning, but the butchering gloves are almost necessary.
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> get those fucking fine steel mesh rubbered, pro gloves. << oh ok
mircea_popescu: it's a buck, but the sort of buck that's worth it.
mircea_popescu: the first time a rib punctures through your anal play latex condom glove and you end up spending n hours and n^2 dollars on doctors you see the wisdom.
BingoBoingo: Latex is awful at resisting puncture.
mod6: fair enough.
mod6: i've been stabbed by a number of phesant bones while cuttign them up. sucks.
mircea_popescu: see. when you move from fowl to fawn you go up on the scale of bad shit to catch.
mircea_popescu: rabbit counts as fowl for this purpose.
mircea_popescu: fawn i mean.
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> fawn i mean. << sure.
mircea_popescu: yeah those look pretty cool.
mircea_popescu: o look they have a whole apron and sleeve thing. the sleeve is great, other than side index / metacarpophalangeal joint injury, you mostly get the above wrist spot.
mod6: alright, i'll have to get something like those. will report (with pics?) when I get the next couple of rabbits.
mircea_popescu: it's the sort of shit people keep wanting to borrow from you.
BingoBoingo: But don't loan gloves. They have a worse rate of return than BTCJam
mod6: haha
BingoBoingo: Anyways when it comes to cheap disposables the rule is latex for condoms and nitrile for gloves.
mod6: Sounds fair. I just got the latex style ones for my hand-rolled first aid kits.
mircea_popescu: anyway, if you were running a butcher thing you'd prolly still waqnt the steel mesh things ; but for what you do the thing you found prolly perfect fit.
BingoBoingo: Latex resists friction better (nitrile splits) and Nitrile resists puncture and cutting better.
BingoBoingo: But not to the point of wanting to use it on critter autopsies
mod6: I'll see what I can find. Will let you guys know.
mircea_popescu: why the fuck are all the chicks running fashion blogs butt ugly.
BingoBoingo: The gotta pretend the can do fashion because can't go nude looking like that
mircea_popescu: i dunno, i don't go around pretending to rap.
