billymg[asciilifeform]: awt: am i going to need to fiddle with ports to get akris working from my residential isp?
billymg[asciilifeform]: hrm, nm, i see akris is using 8080 so it must be something else
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: peer billymg
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: lol - and I still managed to send a command as a message
billymg[asciilifeform]: awt: i think i need to set up port forwarding in my router(s)
billymg[asciilifeform]: isp modem -> router 1 -> router 2 (don't ask)
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: Ok. If you want to configure your at for awt it's the same IP address but at port 54000 now.
awt[asciilifeform]: billymg: are you trying to get the osx build working on your laptop?
billymg[asciilifeform]: the default for akris is 8080 UDP, right?
billymg[asciilifeform]: awt: no, on linux, i figured out why enter wouldn't submit
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-07-28 13:58:08 billymg: turning off numlock fixed it
awt[asciilifeform]: oh sweet! yeah default pest port is 8080.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: awt: Have you tested Akris on Windows?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: I asked two friends to test ChinaPestProgram on macOS. Unfortunately the GUI lags.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: The problem likely originates in the way that Java's AWT subsystem is implemented upon macOS.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: The program is still operable on macOS but the frame-rate of the GUI drops to 1-2.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: On Windows, even on a weak laptop, the frame-rate is around 60.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: billymg: Are you the author of pestnet.io?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: If so, thanks for having hosted and reformatted the specification of Pest.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Vex: I can send you a copy of ChinaPestProgram if you want to join #pest.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Vex: Do you have a GPG key?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: I could not find your name in wot.deedbot.org.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: If I might ask, did the advent of GPT 3.5 and 4 exceed your expectations regarding what neural networks are capable of?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Or did you know all along that these capabilities were coming (and that members of the general public would have access).
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Sorry if this is a slightly grave question.
gregorynyssa2[asciilifeform]: Testing again with a variant username.
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-07-30 14:40:49 gregorynyssa[deedbot|signpost|PeterL]: billymg: Are you the author of pestnet.io?
billymg[asciilifeform]: awt: ok, so i stood up an akris station on my macbook and have it peering fine with my gentoo box over the local network
billymg[asciilifeform]: the two stations can talk to each other
billymg[asciilifeform]: so either a) my port forwarding is messed up somewhere upstream (with one of the routers or the isp modem), or b) my isp is blocking 8080
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: billymg: asciilifeform: I wanted to mention that I would be interested in sharing the source-code of my client.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: I sent a copy to `signpost` already (but since then I have done some important refactoring).
signpost[asciilifeform]: yeah consider releasing as vpatches
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: I have also created an .msi installer for Vex, assuming that he uses Windows.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: signpost: I must confess that I have not yet used V. Later I will try it.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: signpost: asciilifeform: Does any of the V programs contain its own implementation of the diff(1) algorithm?
awt[asciilifeform]: gregorynyssa: I have not tried it on windows. Should work, but I don't know what needs to be installed in order to be able to compile the serpent encryption library.
awt[asciilifeform]: gregorynyssa: have you read about pentacle? You can build vpatch and vdiff with it.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: awt: I fear not. Is Pentacle the name of a program?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: http://problematic.site/src/pentacle/ << Pentacle consists of a shell-script and a set of Debian packages?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Is that right?
awt[asciilifeform]: billymg: another option (of which you may already be aware) is to build a linux binary, upload it to a server, and connect akris desktop to it using ssh port forwarding (gotta set the --remote option). Otoh, would be nice to figure out the port forwarding issues locally.
awt[asciilifeform]: gregorynyssa: as well as a set a vpatches.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Since the packages are .deb files, it means that Pentacle must be used on a Debian-based OS, is that right?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Would Ubuntu qualify?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: My favorite distribution of Linux among the well known ones is Slackware.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: I am required to use Ubuntu for work, though.
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: signpost: I just read this article of yours: http://trinque.org/2022/03/31/deadlock/
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: That is not a bad summary of late German thought. Doctrines of this sort pervade Spengler's writings as well.
awt[asciilifeform]: gregorynyssa: I don't believe a debian based system is required, since most here have successfully built pentacale on gentoo.
signpost[asciilifeform]: thanks; I still think the wot is a necessary cultural tool in properly answering nietzsche.
signpost[asciilifeform]: btw I have begun a draft of the pentacle readme
signpost[asciilifeform] will continue to flesh this out
signpost[asciilifeform]: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-07-30#1029255 << yes, phf's work. I collected his patches and subsequent authors' work in pentacle.

gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: This is similar to "sbase" from suckless.org.
signpost[asciilifeform]: yep apt comparison
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: Is the presence of the "dists" and "main" folders in /debs intentional?
gregorynyssa[asciilifeform]: This reminds me of when I went through the package-list of Slackware and tried to narrow down the most useful packages.
signpost[asciilifeform]: yeah, I had to provide those to satisfy debootstrap using that as a package source
