signpost[asciilifeform]: could use the "urlsafe" variant
signpost[asciilifeform]: + becomes - and / becomes _
signpost[asciilifeform]: is that a log link?
awt[asciilifeform]: signpost: yes.
awt[asciilifeform]: Chipping away at making the entire log accessible from the client.
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: I believe previously discussed, but quite possible to bootstrap a pest net using the pre-pest IRC logs.
signpost[asciilifeform]: what are you thinking about there? someone's client recites them as hearsay or something?
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: Yes. Could modify historical message nicks with some kind of suffix.
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: Or you pre-load your pest db with all the lines.
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: That approach wouldn't work for the current pestnet, but there could be an archival pestnet or something.
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: !!ticker btc usd
signpost[asciilifeform]: awt: there's a threading mechanism, so the logs could be recited in their own thread.
signpost[asciilifeform]: in fact this would allow more than one person to recite his logs as he knew them.
asciilifeform: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-07-11#1028104 << wouldja have separate 'archive nets' for separate chans? (or, lol, cacophony of mixture of ancient chans??) and wat-do about non-pestable handles (tooshort, toolong, non-ascii) ?
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-07-11 00:55:53 awt_akris[awt]: That approach wouldn't work for the current pestnet, but there could be an archival pestnet or something.
asciilifeform: imho easier for folx who want to cite vintage logs, to use the bots ( asciilifeform intends to keep his working, even after fully pestronic loggers come online, if only for this )
asciilifeform can't help but draw an analogy b/w the notion of shoehorning historical folx who were never on pestnet, into the latter, and -- the mormon religion's 'retro conversion' of the dead, lol
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: asciilifeform: hey could even bring them back to life
asciilifeform recalls attempt to bake 'mpbot' in fact while mp was alive
signpost[asciilifeform]: yeah, I'm not married to the idea, but it would be a shame for those citations to eventually become unusable.
signpost[asciilifeform]: just as various blogs have died, etc
signpost[asciilifeform] figures he will eventually blog into such a "subthread" too, though perhaps this idea isn't settled.
asciilifeform: signpost: interesting things tend to get preserved (barring mass cataclysms) 1 way or anuther
dulapbot: (alethepedia) 2020-10-01 asciilifeform: kokkarinen preserved some of danimal's usenet articles on his (long-gone, but variously mirrored) www .
signpost[asciilifeform]: the annoying bit is the references breaking, but this is admittedly probably orthogonal to pest.
signpost[asciilifeform]: can’t fix the past
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: Akris Desktop could be considered an offline log browser, from one angle. Some might prefer to browse old logs this way, rather than someone else's or their own self hosted site. Anyway, no immediate plans to do the gruntwork of loading old logs into the db.
asciilifeform: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-07-11#1028094 << wainot, come to think of it, base58 ?
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-07-11 00:40:02 signpost: could use the "urlsafe" variant
asciilifeform: ( potentially -- for keys, too ? )
asciilifeform: http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-07-11#1028121 << irc-type log to date is iirc <100MB. hypothetically a pestron could fix displayed log refs via brute fulltext search in the former (optionally)
bitbot[asciilifeform]: Logged on 2023-07-11 12:04:25 signpost: the annoying bit is the references breaking, but this is admittedly probably orthogonal to pest.
asciilifeform: ( that being said, the sooner htmlistic log refs are to pest msg hashes rather than local log line #s, i suppose, the better )
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: Clicking on a timestamp copies a pest link to the clipboard.
awt_akris[asciilifeform]: !!ticker btc usd
