billymg: thimbronion: since there's now talk of people setting up irc relays i'm looking into putting together a server i can rack somewhere here in cr
billymg: if i get a 2U case i can fit a low profile cooler like this: https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-L9x65-Premium-Low-Profile-Cooler/dp/B00VB3Y89E
billymg: i'm wondering if the 125W AMD i was planning to use would be too much though
billymg: do you have any advice on what worked/didn't work when building yours?
billymg: asciilifeform: what kind of cooler do you use for those?
asciilifeform: billymg: the stock one from 'supermicro'
asciilifeform: see e.g.
billymg: asciilifeform: ok thanks. is the idea that server rooms are usually kept cold enough to not warrant any kind of fancy cooler?
asciilifeform: billymg: that is so, but even in typical home at 'room temp' will run. the reason is that the fans have 3-5x engineering margin, they are expected to cool the box even when severely clogged and some have died
asciilifeform: this comes at the cost of 'sounds like shop vac'
billymg: ahh, gotcha
thimbronion: billymg: I also went with stock supermicro. I wish I'd bought a couple more 1Us from the same supplier honestly.
thimbronion: billymg: All I did was plug in some ecc ram and a 3ware raid controller.
