thimbronion: !ticker xbtusd
lekythion: Kraken XBTUSD: 53645.50000
thimbronion: Even though written in ruby, I've found my bot to be extremely stable in terms of staying connected.
thimbronion: And the Encyclopedia has been populated: http://alethepedia.com/?p=143134&b=The%20transition&e=Israel. Totally disorganized and riddled with OCR junk, but better than pediwiki.
thimbronion: Lots of opportunities for sane authors to rewrite modern history as well, seeing as there's nothing in it after 1910.
thimbronion: Currently wondering how much it would cost to scan my 1958 Britannica...
thimbronion: "I find it ridiculous that a man should not be able to have more than one legitimate wife. When she is pregnant, it is as if he had no wife. People don't have concubines any longer, to be sure, but they have mistresses, who cost them a great deal more. I am speaking of well-to-do people, because the poor could never feed more than one wife." - Napoleon Bonaparte, 1817.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: scan -- cheap; meaningful ocr -- costly (req's. human attention, lots of it)
asciilifeform owns a copy of that very same; packed into crates atm
thimbronion: asciilifeform: I bought after learning of yours.
thimbronion: Really opened my eyes.
asciilifeform: afaik it was the last 100% unabridged paper edition
thimbronion: It was created for a literate audience.
snsabot: (trilema) 2017-05-14 asciilifeform: asciilifeform had a 1958 'britannica', made in usa, that he fished out of a dumpster as a boy. it was superb, as far as encyclopaedia goes, about on par with famous большая советская энциклопедия . but today it lives packed in a crate.
snsabot: (trilema) 2018-08-13 asciilifeform: even 'большая советская энциклопедия' was closer to d'alembert's item, than pedi
asciilifeform: ^ in re the ~other~ 'for literate audience' famous encyclopaedia
thimbronion: I should have studied Russian instead of Chinese. Hotter chicks and better reading.
asciilifeform: afaik plenty to read in cn; but quite 'martian', takes moar effort for white devil to even begin to make sense of the material
thimbronion: Tell me about it
asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/alethepedia/2021-04-26#1002461 << mine stays connected not because written in anyffin remarkable (it's a python script) but because uses correct (as empirically determined) algo for the 'ping' ritual
snsabot: Logged on 2021-04-26 11:15:01 thimbronion: Even though written in ruby, I've found my bot to be extremely stable in terms of staying connected.
thimbronion: asciilifeform: same must be true of the bot lib I'm using
asciilifeform: erryone who uses that algo, their bot stays connected (incl., iirc, e.g. diana's bash bot)
thimbronion: Kind of a frustrating position - knowing IRC is going away, but not having anything to leap to yet.
asciilifeform: ( the latter apparently still in use by jfw et al )
thimbronion: So no urge to fix existing IRC libs.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: irc is by far not the saddest horse in that glue factory at.
asciilifeform: i consider 'irc bot' a solved problem, ftr.
asciilifeform: thimbronion: fwiw i suspect that irc per se, like e.g. http, will only go away 100% when the asteroid hits.
thimbronion: Like horses, yes.
asciilifeform: e.g. morseism is still alive&well.
asciilifeform: (can see for yerself in the 30m band)
asciilifeform: thimbronion: 'fix irc libs' is imho a severe misapprehension -- there is no need for 'irc libs' ( asciilifeform's bot fully illustrates errything needed to operate on fleanode ) nor is there 'deep science' in implementing irc per se (the item erryone seems to have had issue with, was ~fleanode-specific~ keepalive ritual)
asciilifeform: anyone who needs a fleanode-sitting bot, has had for almost 2y nao a one-page crib sheet to work from. and i have nfi how to even possibly make it more clear.
thimbronion: Got it
asciilifeform: thimbronion: simply bewilders me, that this (imho -- entirely trivial) problem, which asciilifeform killed in mid-'19 and hung its head on his wall, continues to return from the grave regularly for other folx
thimbronion: My lisp bot hasn't been up enough for me to know whether it's a problem or not yet.
thimbronion: Has whaack's patch, so shouldn't be but I haven't tested.
thimbronion: billymg: how's business down in CR?
billymg: thimbronion: i've just been relaxing. some consulting hours here and there, some reading, some vidya
billymg: small projects around the property. very pura vida pace
billymg: i also created a chan at #billymg a couple days ago, and i'm working on a website to do some recruiting (it will present itself as a more welcoming on-ramp to V and TRB than the logs), hopefully attract some of the not complete morons
snsabot: (asciilifeform) 2021-04-06 asciilifeform: thimbronion: clicked by accident, then thought 'hey, not complete moron!'
thimbronion: billymg: neat re: website.
