thimbronion: Heading back down to CR Dec. 19th.
whaack: thimbronion: congratulations
thimbronion: whaack: ty.

gregorynyssa: I read this article just now: http://ztkfg.com/2020/12/jiu-jitsu/
gregorynyssa: What makes Jiu Jitsu interesting is that you can practice sparring with
gregorynyssa: near full commitment while maintaining a lowered risk of injury compared
gregorynyssa: to other martial arts. You can be choked several times in a session,
gregorynyssa: maybe even pass out, and still be able to train the next day.
gregorynyssa: ^ brutal
thimbronion: gregorynyssa: I did judo in high school. Reportedly way less risk of injury than Jiu Jitsu.
gregorynyssa: I never quite understood the difference between the two. would you mind explaining?
thimbronion: gregorynyssa: I never tried Jiu Jitsu, so I can't explain the difference. All I know is that my Judo instructor said it was more dangerous.
gregorynyssa: it is also tragic that the incorrect Romanization became fossilized. it should have been Ju Jutsu.
gregorynyssa: see also, recent film: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9624766/
Vexual: why ju jutsu, and not jiu jitsu?
gregorynyssa: "ju jutsu" is considered the correct spelling under Hepburn Romanization.
whaack: I did judo when I was about 8 years old. From what I recall about Judo there is more focus on knocking your opponent down from a standing position. In competition you get points for various types of slams. There is also pinning in Judo but you are not allowed to choke, so you just try to hold a more gentle pin for a long time
whaack: In Jiu Jitsu there is a component of knocking your opponent down (competition starts from standing position), but there are various rules about how you are allowed to get someone off their feet
Vexual: I suspect ju jutsu practitioners also consider judo dangerous
whaack: yes being slammed is dangerous
whaack: if you fall with any joint locked out with your body weight + someone elses you can break a limb or require knee surgery
whaack: also it's really bad to fall on your head
whaack: (duh)
gregorynyssa: whaack: could you tell us a bit more about which martial arts were proved by MMA to be useless?
gregorynyssa: if Karate was not effective, then what about Tae Kwon Do and KKung Fu?
whaack: I am not an expert, I don't watch much UFC/MMA, but from speaking with other people and seeing what's trending now it seems that muay Thai, jui jitsu, boxing, and wrestling are the disciplines that have proven themselves above all others
Vexual: perhaps it's less effective in new combat sports
