adlai: ty for that correction, asciilifeform
adlai: thimbronion: "Prince Trippy" is the pseudonym that verisimilitude uses to claim copyright on the code published in the Gopher hole linked from his website
adlai had heard of "gopher", maybe three times in the past two decades, until encountering that
adlai: ultimately my complaint is that custom websites, even when they are quite minimalistic (e.g. the various log viewers), are yet another step of indirection from the content itself.
adlai: you can probably minimize the degree to which your custom site's format will cause headaches to whomever is building the next bot's parser, since you have already encountered a few of these headaches while building lekythion
adlai: thimbronion: I see one hit in my logs from lekythion, to /robots.txt ; should I be concerned about its aversion to read further after the 404 ?
adlai: see/saw, w/e
adlai wonders whether the omission of http://thimbron.com/2020/06/lekythion-search-bot-source/ from category/search was intentional
adlai does not intend to write a robots.txt anytime soon, no offense intended to the people who consider such a file necessary
adlai: aiui, any 'robot' can still proceed past this 404 without breaking various compliances, and the presence of such a file is primarily of interest to crawlers that intend to spastically await new content
thimbronion: adlai: adhering to robots.txt was an experiment to see if following the rules would prevent my bot from being blocked by reddit, bitcointalk, and archive.is, to no avail. I will probably discard that functionality.
adlai: again, unless I grossly misunderstood the tl;dr written in various "website admin for dummies" guides, absence of robots.txt does not equal denial of entry to robots! it just means, "no special rules, please don't abuse"
adlai: fwiw, my blog's log routinely gets screenfulls of liquishit from various spiders, scriptkits, and occasionally even things that appear to be manual exploration by bored humans. this is not the end of the world.
adlai is amused at how frequently they search for php routes... has nobody ever heard of anything other than wordpress?
thimbronion: adlai: tell that to archive.is I guess. What a fraudulent site.
adlai: what is fraudulent about them?
thimbronion: That they provide an archiving service.
adlai: eheheh. by "what is fraudulent", I am asking for examples of their failure to deliver, not for the failed promise.
thimbronion: Ok, for ex. their archives are only arbitrarily available. Hours are posted at my local library, but not at archive.is.
thimbronion: I think I could actually retrieve all of the archived content from #bitcoin-assets/#trilema, but I'm not sure it would be worth the cost.

thimbronion: asciilifeform: my current thinking is that there are, towards the end of #trilema, some links to logs.nusuchlabs.com. Going forward, it is clear that indexing of logs must be handled very differently than indexing of blogs.
adlai: my impression has always been that a generic 'search', unless given additional directives, should return some point within the sharpest extremum of the reference graph, as opposed to the neologism's moment of birth
snsabot: Logged on 2020-09-24 12:43:49 thimbronion: Not nearly enough results to include the original use of the term.
adlai: however, that opinion is almost certainly biased by two decades of pagerank's stench all over the various search engines
adlai: you intentionally link to the meta-article, instead of shame-and-war-revisited.html ?
asciilifeform: adlai: iirc i usually do
adlai shrugs, reads -revisited
asciilifeform: adlai: btw i keep thinking there was a better piece on the subj, by naggum, but never can find it
asciilifeform: ( re structure/content separation , failure of html to enable same, etc )
adlai: several of his archived posts are on this topic; I'm uncertain which one you mean.
asciilifeform: adlai: possibly item did not make it into the archive. ( saw prior to demise of google's usenet service ) -- or possib. imagined.
adlai: my guess is that you meant https://www.xach.com/naggum/articles/3250033735497397@naggum.no.html although there is a thread in 1996-06 focusing on SGML that might be what you recalled.
adlai: these being articles 3138714312189865, 3138960936337701, and 3139226293475107
asciilifeform: adlai: these are on subj, but not the item i was thinking of. possibly mirage.
adlai: maybe one of Kenny's, although I don't think he's officially material for archives yet
asciilifeform: adlai: who?

adlai: seems to be alive and kicking, and even has an http [no s!] site for his consultancy
asciilifeform: adlai: familiar name. i tried his 'cells' proggy long ago.
asciilifeform: his shithub seems to be full of cthonic horrors nao, tho.
adlai: and twitter is nine nines political memeing, although I did scroll far enough to see a handful of "why aren't you using lisp?"
adlai: this is somewhere between disturbing, and incrediblol: http://www.tiltonsalgebra.com/
adlai: otoh, it loads and renders much more sanely than most other 'single page apps'
adlai: probably will not help me pass 2nd semester linear algebra, if I ever continue pursuing the undergraduate credential.
asciilifeform: adlai: possib. useful to you, kurosh's algebra in engl.
adlai: ty!
asciilifeform: adlai: np. see also.
snsabot: (trilema) 2019-02-05 asciilifeform: e.g. brin elder would've luvved to assign e.g. kurosh as the textbook, i suspect, but could not , it dun exist afaik in eng
adlai wonders why Kurosh lays down so much of the groundwork, even including a chapter on groups, without actually going the extra bit and proving Abel-Ruffini
adlai: then again, I would not be able to prove that myself today, without a chance to 'study'
asciilifeform: adlai: it was a freshman-level text.
