joecool: the cardano seems ok if you can maintain physical security, it doesn't even try to stop an opportunistic attacker, i really don't see why it shouldn't have at least a simple auth system
bitcoinpete: mircea_popescu: so what's your internal debate on bitcoin for ccs?
mircea_popescu: joecool but it does. you can destroy it.
bitcoinpete: mircea_popescu: 21:09:35mircea_popescu:the jury in my head is out on the entire topic of bitcoin-backed ccs
joecool: mircea_popescu: assuming i leave it out by accident to go take a shit or whatever, attacker can sign whatever he wants with it, i will know it happened later on when the signature counter is incremented but who knows what he'll have done by that time with my identity
mircea_popescu: joecool well so don't do that.
mircea_popescu: bitcoinpete maybe it works out.
bitcoinpete: ah thought there might've been more there
joecool: mircea_popescu: i figured you'd say as much, it does seem trivial though to echo a string into the device before key generation, have it set a default counter to 3, and require that same string to be passed to the device in order to activate signing function
joecool: mircea_popescu: when counter hits zero cannot sign anything, need to nuke and generate new keys
mircea_popescu: what if you accidentally leave the string in paste buffer or w/e
joecool: mircea_popescu: don't do that?
mircea_popescu: so you see my point.
mircea_popescu: device is designed to fight enemy not user.
joecool: mircea_popescu: except the secret is worthless without the token, if someone had that secret they'd still need physical possession of the device
joecool: ie. if you did leave your unlock key on a public computer it wouldn't matter unless the attacker also held your device

chetty: the trend to video for everything is awful. people to lazy to write/read :(
BingoBoingo: Well, Bill Murray aligns himself with the Usurper regime from chicago
benkay: it's downright baffling, chetty. take, for instance, the podcast noted above. how much more work is it to do that thing than to just write out one's thoughts?
BingoBoingo: chetty: My objection to the video and podcasting is that when I digest information on my own time I want to do it in an aesthetic environment of my choice.
benkay: i suppose that presumes being able to put one's thoughts into coherent words instead of babbling into a microphone.
BingoBoingo: Also some stuff can't be digested well from audio.
chetty: I like podcasts sometimes, listen while doing other stuff but mostly I'd rather read

mircea_popescu: he's not that old.
Mats_cd03: people look at salary averages for men and women, and temporarily forget women sometimes allow a parasite to grow inside them for close to a year that makes them worthless for productive work
LordPutin: your not a bitcoiner if you dont have a neckbeard
Neil: blockchain.info borked again
Mats_cd03: and usually they go on to raise the bugger and leave work to do it
mircea_popescu: Neil nuts huh.
Mats_cd03: so...the corresponding salary differential is a product of that, but in many fields they have parity
nubbins`: Mats_cd03: in fact, if you exclude women who have children, there's still income disparity

assbot: [HAVELOCK] [COG] 9 @ 0.0190016 = 0.171 BTC [-]
ThickAsThieves: succinct*
asciilifeform: ThickAsThieves: there is not, in fact, a programming language called 'lisp', but a large number of langs with various defining characteristics that put them in the category.
asciilifeform: ThickAsThieves: this is described, somewhat abrasively, here: http://www.loper-os.org/?p=405
asciilifeform: ThickAsThieves: additionally, there exist other 'programmable programming languages' - most famously, 'forth'
asciilifeform: ThickAsThieves: here, for instance, is an example of a minimal lisp in ~500 lines of C: https://github.com/qyqx/small-lisp/blob/master/sl3.c
ThickAsThieves: is there a Lisp "framework" and "library" or would such be heresy?
asciilifeform: ThickAsThieves: there is an unimaginable abundance of libraries of every description for various lisps

ThickAsThieves: mostly i'm just trying to at least have a superficial understanding
benkay: if you squint, lean your head sideways and don't work with other javascript developers javascript can be written fairly lispily.
asciilifeform: one can sit a minimal, 'academic' lisp on top of virtually anything in 1/2 hr.
asciilifeform: but usually people are interested in something that is actually usable
asciilifeform: 'sbcl,' for instance, runs at close to the speed of compiled 'c' when used intelligently

ozbot: Official Gmail Blog: Staying at the forefront of email security and reliability: HTTPS-only and 99.
ThickAsThieves: "Starting today, Gmail will always use an encrypted HTTPS connection when you check or send email. Gmail has supported HTTPS since the day it launched, and in 2010 we made HTTPS the default. Today's change means that no one can listen in on your messages as they go back and forth between you and Gmail’s servers—no matter if you're using public WiFi or logging in from your computer,
ThickAsThieves: phone or tablet.
ThickAsThieves: In addition, every single email message you send or receive—100% of them—is encrypted while moving internally. This ensures that your messages are safe not only when they move between you and Gmail's servers, but also as they move between Google's data centers—something we made a top priority after last summer’s revelations."

Namworld: Actual conversation with the irrelevant chatter filtered out. People were talking about making a leveraged trading platforms for altcoins. Advice falling on deaf ears.
Namworld: [17:06] <Namworld> I'm a noob coder. I could maybe have patched up something in a few months, pretended I knew what I was doing and lost customers funds, making tons of money meanwhile. But I'm not a self-centered, over-confident, can-never-fail asshat,
Namworld: [17:09] <Namworld> I know basic PHP and just barely touched database. I made a microapp for fun, that just tracks views and clicks and banners, for a banner exchange. Without any user interface or accounts capability. Just the script for the banners + tracking.
Namworld: [17:09] <Namworld> If I had patched up an exchange with added complexity and everything, it would probably have been a security disaster.
Namworld: [17:10] <TheMediator> Namworld, how long would it take you to get together something VERY simple so that like 10 of us could trade on it
Namworld: [17:10] <TheMediator> I can host and such
Namworld: [17:11] <Namworld> Dangerous thing, it took only a few hours to learn how to do. Making an exchange is in the reach of any moron willing to put a few days to learn how to and a month or two to code it full time.
Namworld: [17:12] <Namworld> That's why you can't trust any website that comes up with a Bitcoin service. Even if it looks nice.
Namworld: [17:12] <deup> that is why there are a bunch of exchanges
Namworld: [17:12] <Namworld> You can't audit the code.
Namworld: [17:12] <TheMediator> its up to you namworld. If you think you can make it happen, we can use it as a base.
Namworld: [17:12] <TheMediator> and expand from there
Namworld: [17:12] <TheMediator> I think we have enough experience between the regulars where we could take turns hacking the exchange until we get it fairly secure
Namworld: I probably should have pastbin'ed that

ninjashogun: mircea_popescu, what do you think the end-game will be?
ninjashogun: will btc be "internet points" or will it be a currency?
ninjashogun: for the purposes of the SEC etc
Duffer1: derp i fixed it
mircea_popescu: Namworld so you're making exchanges for noobs nao?
Duffer1: it's already a currency ninja
mircea_popescu: g_forcewinds ello.
mircea_popescu: ;;later tell yeye_ cheers.
gribble: The operation succeeded.
g_forcewinds: haven't used freenode before so pardon any etiquette mistakes here please
mircea_popescu: g_forcewinds you'll be fine.
mircea_popescu: so one thing is that i didn't dispute the legality of the sec's request, i asked them to establish it.
g_forcewinds: hmm seems an issue of semantics
mircea_popescu: there's an important difference here, i am in no position to dispute anything yet.
mircea_popescu: well actually, it's a fundamental issue of law which somehow seems lost on the journalistic profession
mircea_popescu: some guy wanted me how do i know i didn't break any laws.
ninjashogun: g_forcewinds, not really. Like if you say, "Hi, could you tell me what I'm being arrested for" it's not the same as saying "I'm disputing this arrets, you're detaining me unlawfully!"
mircea_popescu: that's not how laws work. i don't declare that i broke no laws, and i don't contest the authority of some random person making demands.
mircea_popescu: it works the other way around : i don't argue the negative, they make the statements that establish the positive.
g_forcewinds: so how you would characterize your email exchange with the SEC?
mircea_popescu: the sec couldn't decide if it wants to be friends or it wants to be an authority.
mircea_popescu: i indicated to them that they have to make this choice, and how to go about being friends.
g_forcewinds: indeed
mircea_popescu: i wouldn't presume to tell them how to be authoritative, i imagine they have lawyers that can sort it out.
mircea_popescu: either way, i'm not denying or arguing or anything else. someone calls you on the phone, you ask "who is this"
g_forcewinds: but you did question their authority to ask for those documents etc and asked them to show what legal basis they h ad for doing so, yes?
mircea_popescu: that "and" doesn't work. i didn't question anything, i asked them the traditional quo warranto.
mircea_popescu: show your right.
ozbot: The reasons why Bitcoin securities can’t be regulated by the SEC pe Trilema - Un blog de Mircea Po
mircea_popescu: that aside : what makes you judge we're talking about "A bunch of impossible" ?
g_forcewinds: Thanks for clarifying your perspective Mircea. I'll be sure to reach out if I you end up in a story again. What's the best way to get in touch? FYI I work at night
asciilifeform: anyone recall the u.s. supreme court case which proclaimed that barter in grain is taxable?
mircea_popescu: this is by far the best way
asciilifeform: these buggers truly imagine themselves masters of the universe
asciilifeform: not merely of dollar
asciilifeform: and have, since '30s
ninjashogun: good night guys
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform there's a major difference there too. the grain case (and the oranges cove case which is used to teach kids about the sec) all discuss actual items of value.
g_forcewinds: my impossible i meant that it takes a long time for the SEC to make a determination like whether they are going to regulate. I could be wrong, but I think a public comment period is required
asciilifeform: or the u.s. proclamation of extraterritorial jurisdiction of any submarine not carrying a flag
mircea_popescu: there's a lot of difference between trading oranges and trading monopoly money.
asciilifeform: or of nuclear weapons
asciilifeform: (all in federal law, on the books, plain as daylight)
mircea_popescu: g_forcewinds well, yes, but they do have the help of the fed and gao already making similar determinations.
g_forcewinds: that doesnt speed up their own determination though
mircea_popescu: as far as i know this matter has been discussed in their comission already, and they're working towards a decision
mircea_popescu: well ok, but that'd have been a prime spot to crack the story you know ?
mircea_popescu: go hunt down the comissioners and ask them pointed q's about exactly this.
g_forcewinds: I'd love to chat further but at the moment I must run. I'm at work and have stories to write. Hope to chat again soon.
asciilifeform: ianal. but it would surprise me greatly if the matter is settled in such a way as for usg to tell itself to pound sand
g_forcewinds: If I see any commissioners when Im up at 3am ill be sure to ask them ;-)
mircea_popescu: what time is it there now anyway
Duffer1: 11:30
Duffer1: pm, east coast
mircea_popescu: pa, lime midnight
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform you know, such things happen. contrary to what the general public perceives of the government, it does tell itself to go pack sand all the time.
mircea_popescu: perhaps not as often as is the case in romania, but definitely a lot more often than is the case in russia or w/e
asciilifeform: sure - people do surrender occasionally. esp. if they aren't paid enough to give a damn.
mircea_popescu: nah, not at all what i mean.
