asciilifeform: i suppose if ms visualbasic can be a favourite among these people, why not python.
asciilifeform: why not distribute a whole os with the thing!
asciilifeform: (oh wait, they do. winblowz)

mircea_popescu: that "oh, they were fired via email ? did they check make sure it's not fake ?" thing still has me lolling.
asciilifeform: http://log.bitcoin-assets.com/?date=26-09-2015#1286209 << there still ~are~, for the time being, the folks born in the 1930s-40s.

asciilifeform: they actually run (what remains of) the living tissue of the place.
mircea_popescu is skeptical. and will continue to be so, because time ticks behind him. in a decade i'll pretend that not only am i right now, but was right all along : no better stock in that place.
asciilifeform: l0l this sorta worked in su.
mircea_popescu: aha.
asciilifeform: but it is not entirely a useless observation because it explains why the 'lights stayed on as long as they did'
asciilifeform: now, when these people are gone - THEN yes, zimbabwe.
asciilifeform: full bore.
mircea_popescu: an exercise not unlike explaining why "the green stays left in the mandelbrot set for as long as it does"
mircea_popescu: you might find that most of the windows with lights in them are painted cardboard in the shape of a window with a light in it.
mircea_popescu: the us got a random guy from kenya to pretend like he's a law professor ; anhd some random derp from pakistan to pretend he's a district attorney.
mircea_popescu: who's fooled ? was rice a secretary of state ? was fiorina a ceo ?
mircea_popescu: no lights.
asciilifeform: laugh but this is not entirely fiction. i discovered recently that it is customary where i live for the city to continue to cut the grass in the yards of empty houses
asciilifeform: (to ward off squatters, presumably)
mircea_popescu: aha.
mircea_popescu: well, to maintain the pretense
mircea_popescu: "it's a city! honest!"
asciilifeform: for their part, the squatters are fooled. the buildings, stay empty.
asciilifeform: pretty basic chumpatronics, i think. why spend more effort than is required to fool the mark ?
asciilifeform: most of usa likely ~does~ think fiorina was ceo, or obama - law professor
asciilifeform: or rather, lacks the referents for these words that would let them say 'no'
mircea_popescu: except man is not the measure of all things.

asciilifeform: oh but no, they don't try to maintain the ~inside~
asciilifeform: it normally does not last very long, and the thing drops to below-value-of-land (buyer must pay for demolition)
asciilifeform: instead, just appearances.
asciilifeform: an empty house, from usg's standpoint, still does 90% of its job - keeping 'property values!111!!111!!1' sky-high.
asciilifeform: by not being sold 'under' price.
mircea_popescu: im sure they're trying to stuff the bill into SOMETHING. an acquisition of some sort, vc capital somewhere, a credit card balance movement to a larger credit card. it hasta.
asciilifeform: commercial buildings, where i live, have been known to rot for years, even a decade, before finally being demolished and replaces with condos that NOBODY BUYS
asciilifeform: but to the folks who ordered this, they still 'work', yes
asciilifeform: nobody needs to live in it, for it to 'work'.
asciilifeform: just keep prices at 400-500K for the remaining chumpers
asciilifeform: it does it just as well by being empty and decaying.
asciilifeform: (so long as this is not immediately obvious to passers-by)
asciilifeform: you can drive around and see this, towers of 'condos' with one or two windows out of every dozen, lit up
asciilifeform: (often these, on close examination, are stairwells, no one lives there)
mircea_popescu: well sure, for as long as a usg-pretense exists to keep bankrolling everyone's pretense, everyone's gonna keep on pretending.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: the physical manifestations of this bezzle are surprisingly public and visible
asciilifeform: perhaps these, too, will 'go the way of the snake's legs' eventually
asciilifeform: like the physical fighter jets did
mircea_popescu: afaik they still pretend re the jets.
asciilifeform: a handful of machines after $trillion is not much of a presence
mircea_popescu: the amplitude of pretense is to be measured at the muzzle of the pretender, tho.

mircea_popescu: quote of interest, "The Dust Bowl was no accident of nature. A functioning grassland prairie produces more biomass each year than does even the most technologically advanced wheat field. The problem is, it's mostly a form of grass and grass roots that humans can't eat. So we replace the prairie with our own preferred grass, wheat. Never mind that we feed most of our grain to livestock, and that livestock is perfectly c

PeterL: So I have to use Winblows at work. The most annoying thing is the tendency of programs to steal focus at wierd times. Like, I start a program, see it is going to take a minute to load, switch to my other program and sign in, but wait the first stole the focus and now my password is sitting there in plaintext. Bleh.
