mircea_popescu: cazalla it's no alternative sort of deal. the "us in south china sea" story is coming to an end this decade.
mats: usg is notoriously stubborn so please share intel with the class
mircea_popescu: no usable jet, not like carriers would be usable even if they had a jet, no money to back it all up with anyway even if they had a miracle cure for rocketry, and no brains to work the entire thing even if money were somehow to be found, as it's always found when there's brains involved.
cazalla: mircea_popescu, i'll hold you to that!
mircea_popescu: nothing too secret bout it.
mircea_popescu: next us president whoever is gonna be is going to discover a sudden fondness for russia and "move past previous difficulties", and the transition's complete : washington is now a sort of germany, in charge of a large rust bucket that doesn't much care for it.
mats: i dun see it
mircea_popescu: but you do see where it says us gdp < euro gdp yes ?
mats: usg has the next best thing to a naval base in south china sea
mats: the philippines
mircea_popescu: anything the us has is there for the taking.
mircea_popescu: were the philippines in the beijing accord btw ?
mats: im not sure what you're specifically referring to
mircea_popescu: Noynoy Aquino said that the Philippines is still considering to join AIIB. "We have not indicated that we are ready to join also. We are actually at the stage of studying the proposal to join this particular new entity."
mircea_popescu: whore be milking the gringo for all he's got.
mats: oh, AIIB
mircea_popescu: japan was also considering it but then... somehow they changed their mind.
cazalla: well if it all goes to shit.. might finally find out what the yanks have been doing at pine gap all these years

mircea_popescu: it'll suck when your kids come of age, not next decade.
mats: i am pretty curious to see what happens to china over the next century
mats: the one child policy has serious cultural ramifications
mats: chinese females are predictably holding out longer and raising their standards, but thats still a lot of extinct lines
mircea_popescu: you got women don't ya ?
cazalla: alotta chinese women with aussie men these days
mats: this predicament is why i have no sympathy for all the SJW whiners in USA
mats: folks have no sense of scale
mats: imagine being a chinese male with no prospects
mats: (you can't)
mircea_popescu: back in 1992 all ukrainian girls were dancing in leipzig.
mircea_popescu: give it a little, all ohio girls be dancin' in shanghai
cazalla: yellow man, white pussy, big $$$
mircea_popescu: best swindle ever.
mircea_popescu: recently the airlines managed to lose more money than was made in the history of flight.
mircea_popescu: meanwhile prostitution... i suspect whores are going to make more money this century than total up to date.
mats: how did they manage to do that after making 3x usu profits because cost of fuel going down?
mircea_popescu: this was 2000-2010
mats: my understanding is that operating an airline has always been a losing proposition
mircea_popescu: ayway, whoredom's gonna be great business. the chinese bezzle looks like it's going to be this, a lot of small yellow beta males swarmin' around. except they won't try to go to college and get a mortgage to please the old folks.
mircea_popescu: they'll just carry dept to stick coins in the stereoscopic machine with the girl taking her pants off
cazalla: airline industry is aus is pretty bad, so bad that QANTAS has a debt guarantee from the government
mats: IIRC US-based airlines have consistently reported 1% or 0 profit since being privatized
mats: hedging against cost of fuel is a bitch
mircea_popescu: even train traverl was aspirational at some point
mircea_popescu: and railroads raked it in
mircea_popescu: and re the "imagine being a drone"... why do you think it's so impossible to imagine ?
mircea_popescu: in any case : the best thing that could happen is for a whole lot of lines to go extinct. like... most of them, really.
mats: its a dramatically different thing to be a white WalMart greeter
mats: than it is to be a manual laborer for Wu Gang's Mining Emporium
mircea_popescu: more like a freeranged cow for wu gang's organic organ growth farm.
mircea_popescu: plenty western fixations the chinese do not share.
mats: the cultural context is entirely different, and whether its true or not,
mats: there's a lot more implicit potential social mobility involved in being a white dude in us
mircea_popescu: social mobility is a nice way to say it. the other way to say it is "swimming in a shitswamp"
mircea_popescu: as empirically observed, there's not any cause or any way to build anything in a swamp.
mircea_popescu: and everything stinks
mats: whereas, if you're a chinese dude,
mats: literally 1 in 4 dudes you meet will never procreate
mats: sucks to suck
mircea_popescu: i had no idea having kids is the summum bonum
mircea_popescu: when did that happen ?
chetty: only in Amerika can you just decide to be black even if you skin is white
cazalla: mats, are you asian?
mats: yes
cazalla: plenty of white people aren't procreating either, different reasons though (career women)
cazalla: there's what.. a billion or more chinese? i think they're good numbers wise
mircea_popescu: numbers really are worthless.
mircea_popescu: used to be, for most of human history, numbers mattered.
mircea_popescu: they don't, now.
cazalla: why's that?
chetty: it still takes 2 to tango
mircea_popescu: only thing another hundred twerps does for you is more inane demands.
cazalla: so we're at the point we're it's sorta like bezzle but for people?
mircea_popescu: originally, people pinned women down and stuck it in them because the kids cost nothing, either fed themselves off offal or died, and then could be used, for purposes.
mircea_popescu: then, steam power replaced muscle power, and people started playing talent lottery.
cazalla: well i must say, it comes to a shock that i have been printing bezzle
cazalla: as a shock even
mircea_popescu: one million schmucks had to kill themselves raising kids in new jersey so there could be a miss new jersey on television
mircea_popescu: nobody gives a shit about rockstars and genius scientists now.
mircea_popescu: consequently... really, no further point. if tomorrow you wake up and there's not ten billion people but ten thousand, there won't be a notable difference.
mircea_popescu: minus, of course, your not being there to notice.
cazalla: could be if the remaining 9,999 are all women :P
mircea_popescu: prolly about 6k of em
mats: i don't care about reproduction, but there is the issue of those others
chetty: would be noticeable when stuff starts breaking down
cazalla: mats, maybe they don't care either?
mats: i suppose the tentative plan is to recolonize oceania and us
mats: pretty hard to ignore biological imperatives, cazalla
mats: even when you enjoy the taste of cock
cazalla: well if/when america topples over, down under is shit out of luck, chinese will come flooding out of the water and on to the land
cazalla: and i can't imagine the chinese men will have much mercy for the aussie men banging their chinese-australian women
cazalla: mats, i doubt they do ignore them which is why pornotubes are the top sites
mircea_popescu: who knows, maybe they pay to watch
cazalla: pay in what? dollars? doubtful, iron ore? chinese own it all already
mircea_popescu: uniques lol
cazalla: meh chinese farmed em already
mats: the problem i'm faced with now is where to flee
mircea_popescu: actually there's a decent sf story in there, title it something like "986"

asciilifeform: http://log.bitcoin-assets.com/?date=17-06-2015#1165915 << key detail: 'IP-Core : MIG V:3.6.1'. that's 'memory interface generator', xilinx's gui turd. it shits out code which is a mere wrapper on a closed-source gigantic steaming pile of shit. and the output is unique to a particular model and subtype of chip.
assbot: Logged on 17-06-2015 11:55:10; kakobrekla: http://log.bitcoin-assets.com/?date=10-10-2014#867175 < http://opencores.com/project,ddr2_sdram what am i missing here ?
asciilifeform: you can pick up a textbook and write a dram controller for fpga from first principles - and it won't work. because, for starters, only a small number of output cells in the chip can function on both rising and falling edge of clock cycle (what 'ddr' means) and only xilinx's closed turd knows where they are in the routing fabric;
asciilifeform: on top of this, all of the critical paths in the circuit must have approximately same propagation delay - or the thing ~won't work at all~
asciilifeform: this, again, is only possible if you know the actual physical fabric (only xilix does)
asciilifeform: thing is, fpga is fundamentally a very cruel lie
asciilifeform: it gives the impression that you can actually turn any valid logical circuit into an imitation of something like slow 1980s silicon
asciilifeform: but in reality, you are stuck using all kinds of pre-baked pieces (adders, shifters, ddr outputs, and the routing fabric per se) baked in there by vendor
asciilifeform: and ~every single chip~ even from particular vendor has entirely different internals.
asciilifeform: the entire thing is cynically deliberate. notice how, e.g., xilinx boards, come with ethernet jack and magnetics? well, you can't actually ~use~ the ethernet without paying a per-unit license fee to the bastards
asciilifeform: because go and try writing own controller with anything like acceptable performance.
asciilifeform: sdram is the absolute worst case, because the difference between 'acceptable performance' and 'works at all, for any purpose' is slim
asciilifeform: because you MUST meet the dram refresh timings - or bits fall on the floor.
asciilifeform: you ~can~ sloppily 'bit-bang' a 10BaseT ethernet nic. but ~not~ sdram controller.
asciilifeform: a readily-available ~true~ fpga would be the greatest political advance in a century of electronic crud.
asciilifeform: thing could even have a clear lid, like the old uv-erasable eeproms, for inspection with optical microscope (the fabric would be visibly homogeneous)
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu ^
asciilifeform: there would be no valid reason for any two units, regardless of ~when~ or ~where~ made, to be distinct in any way other than size and density.
asciilifeform: like grid paper.
jurov: if only you could decide somwhow what s.nsa will be doing
asciilifeform: jurov: i can 'decide' all i want' 'spirit is willing but flesh is weak' in this case. unless you'd like to contribute $100B for a fab and an army
asciilifeform: given as presently i can't even afford to not have a day job which eats 98% of time & energy
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu's point about the 'excluded middle' ( http://log.bitcoin-assets.com//?date=13-06-2015#1163457 << thread ) is valid, but it simply means that we are falling from skyscraper and trying to invent parachute on our way down.
assbot: Logged on 13-06-2015 17:27:26; mircea_popescu: if you need anything that has to be made on something in the middle, make it now.
asciilifeform: i will not say with confidence that no one will ~ever~ make meaningful semiconductors in their kitchen or in the jungle. but i WILL say with confidence that no one will make meaningful semiconductors in their kitchen ~using things that have been made in today's kitchens.~
asciilifeform: this is an important distinction.
midnightmagic: metalicarap's coming. sooner or later, it'll arrive, and then it's just a matter of time to people being confident that from atomic structure on up, we can be sure that what we wanted is in fact what we have.

asciilifeform: this is precisely the kind of animal mircea_popescu wrote about - idiot 'millenials' who have never so much as carved a chess set with own hands, failing to distinguish elaborate 3d drawings from actual tech

midnightmagic: gmax pointed me at one on ebay not so long ago.. it was pretty inexpensive, certainly less than I'd pay for a used car, at any rate.
asciilifeform: midnightmagic: i'm an aficionado of university surplus junk myself. and will point out that, even without having to pay for shipping (absolute killer, but luckily i live near one) the actual price you pay, once you factor in the cost of (sometimes unobtainable) spare parts to replace broken/missing items - is often not far from 'car'
asciilifeform: and often there are interesting hidden costs. for instance, i am somewhat limited in what surplus junk i can use on account of lacking 3-phase mains power
midnightmagic: let's.. see.. hrm. According to the log about it, there was a device capable of a couple orders of magnitude better than 10-4 torr
