mircea_popescu: ah those are different, random people's auctions. this'd be an official minigame auction, like eg http://trilema.com/2015/one-hundred-million-eulora-coins-or-in-other-words-one-bitcoin/
mircea_popescu: i can link you to the proceedings of a coupla past ones if you wanna see
BingoBoingo: Do it pete_dushenski, For the Republic!
mircea_popescu: hey listen pete_dushenski , i need someone to be the auctioneer for the next s.mg auction in eulora because i want to be able to bid myself. do you wanna do the job ? i'll pay ya 1mn ecus.
mircea_popescu: wands of shrapnel might do it, if you live long enough. but no chests there are good enough to spawn one
mircea_popescu: i even tried reloading the map billion times to see if useful peasant pops up. some give you major bonuses.
phf: hmm, i'm giving it another three days
mircea_popescu: people in gaming always go "oh, it's always possible" and then point to the death of lord british as a definitive example.
phf: ha, i'm not falling for that one! i'm right now in the process of trying to kill that damn dragon
mircea_popescu: phf dude you gotta try the caster. it's the night of reason, so i got summon skeletons; summon skeleton archers and summo nzombies on the main + summon zombies and summon floating sword ON THE PET. that's like 40 different things ; and a sort of chain lightning that goes through walls. (summons also work through walls).

mircea_popescu: asciilifeform ayup. there's tons of stuff, i cut it short because my reference list was gettying endless
mircea_popescu: i honestly thought i should run around drinking random fluids more. isn't random-fluids-drinking the death preventer ? it is ARMOR !?
mircea_popescu: meanwhile torchlight has the following advice for me : "if you find yourseld dying too much, you should try to increase your armor"
mircea_popescu: actually iirc there was some woman who named her daugher Drop Table Students;-- so...
mircea_popescu: this'd be on the level of naming it "Villa Please Turn The Doorknob To Gain Entrance."
mircea_popescu: it's up there on the level of, you know how pretentions twits NAME their house ? "Villa Futipemata" and stuff ?
mircea_popescu: a right. so basically there's no reasonable expectation
asciilifeform: actually it is possible, in theory, for ALL of the moduli to pop , if satan made a modulus consisting of p1,p2,p3....pn (everybody's p...)
mircea_popescu: whereas the reported factors are distinct...
mircea_popescu: there's something i don't understand. if 3 mods pop at the same time like this, shouldn't it be because they shared a factor ?
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: possibly. i haven't opened the hood on that thing in eons
asciilifeform: you have a www.www.... in there
shinohai: Use Cases: "Willy was creating a logo for his soccer club in Inkscape when it crashed. Being the family's Ubuntu expert, he feels a responsibility to help improve the system. He's reported one or two bugs in Launchpad before, though it wasn't a particularly enjoyable experience. "

mircea_popescu: the above three lines took 3 years of thinking to produce ; this in preference of $3mn or worse.
mircea_popescu: fuckgoats is basically one part of the original cardano, specifically, the one actually worth making, turned up to 11.
asciilifeform: the toaster is still happening -- in pieces that can be assembled to same.
mircea_popescu: this is not directly obvious from a theoretical view. a major reason why defensive business management and practical engineering pay off is that you get to catch this sort of thing and fix it.
mircea_popescu: pete_dushenski the original planned item (cardano) was an over-engineered, incorrectly defined, too broad and too complex toaster-and-shoe-shiner.
asciilifeform: it is not obvious from the brochure, what FUCKGOATS does ??
pete_dushenski: asciilifeform: from peterl in contravex comments : "I could be wrong (have not ordered one yet myself), but isn't the cardano a sub-piece of the FUCKGOATS? So they are delivering a bigger, more complex, more useful item (but later) than what they originally planned to sell?" i must say i missed this difference b/w fuckgoats and cardano as well. i guess i'd assumed that the latter'd been renamed to the former

mircea_popescu: this might be the most covering census ever published. ~everything else seems to go by the "we sampled 500 here and 500 there - if it's good enough to guess your president it should be good enough for the net too!"
phf: heh, just noticed that my glyf.org is in the banners list, with a rather embarrassingly verbose banner

Framedragger: ("mkj" is a pretty random acronym of the first names of three people who started up the server in ~2008)
mircea_popescu: do you happen to have handy also link to the original discussion in july that lead to you scanning ?
a111: Logged on 2016-11-20 23:28 Framedragger: the *banners.txt's are my partial cleanup, *_err_scan.log's are the original stderr's (with some junk in them). but i will clean this myself later. and siphnos.mkj.lt is where i'll host phuctor-related data. (it's on a separate unused vps, got an 'ok' from $work for now.)
mircea_popescu: alrighty, lettuce see what gems lie in the data oncle Framedragger has provied.
Framedragger: fwiw i plan to make these available through a search interface - will put stuff into db. i think i'll make it so that one can link to particular db entry via that deterministic-alf-fingerprint you concocted
asciilifeform: next time (as inevitably must) that i regrind phuctor and its db, i'ma stuff these in retroactively
Framedragger: (and @all, http://siphnos.mkj.lt/datadrop/ is the canonical URL for all data gathered from the ssh scans. includes raw stderr logs from ssh-keyscan utility, e.g. http://siphnos.mkj.lt/datadrop/banners/s1/1_err_scan.log ; scripts for processing these are http://siphnos.mkj.lt/datadrop/banners/write_ssh_banners.py and http://siphnos.mkj.lt/datadrop/banners/process_all_banners.sh )

Framedragger: (the criterion for choosing which banner to report is a simple "max string length.") (again, note, all of those "multiple" banners were from a single scan event, same date, so no historical knowledge is lost by only reporting single banner per single (ip,port) pair.) hope this makes sense.
Framedragger: (format in TXTs is simple CSV: ipv4address,banner -- the latter may contain spaces, commas etc, but any surrounding whitespace (incl newlines) is stripped. there's only one banner per ipv4 even though *same* scan sometimes returned multiple (slightly different, e.g. includes or excludes OS string) banners.)
mircea_popescu: eh no real need for hardware acceleration on the old games anyway
phf: fwiw play on mac scripts didn't add anything except for a dodgy point and click interface that downloads a bunch of stuff i don't need. game still doesn't play well with native rendering. i suspect tha some specific binary blob version of directx (or precursor?) will solve the issue, but...
asciilifeform: btw phun phakt for mircea_popescu -- you can plug the original v1 green rng into that thing, and it'll run

mircea_popescu: they're jus wasted space in gdm
phf: i actually missed the title bars from ion window manager (http://www.gilesorr.com/papers/otherwm2003/images/ion.manpage.png) because xterm title escape codes is one of the easiest ways to pack a lot of meta information from pretty much any cli app

asciilifeform: but otherwise works ok. beware of cache (can lead to incoherency between the instructions executed and what probe sees)
asciilifeform: early firmware versions barfed routinely when cpu switched modes, the last one - more rarely, but still did, it is also exacerbated by the braindamage of gdb
asciilifeform: trinque: there is one gnarly moment with those -- mode switches
trinque: it'll take me some time to have asm skills worth the mention
asciilifeform: because iirc i posted ~everything that is truly needed (other than a couple of undocumented commands, will deal with those some time later in january when 2nd crate is out)
asciilifeform: to make it do useful work, is somewhat other problem.
asciilifeform: not only could it, but there's been a d00d serving up his www on a pic16f84, via slip, since 1990s...
asciilifeform: maybe phf or trinque or whoever, has half of this, and now can more easily come up with other half.
asciilifeform: this is actually why i bothered to clean up and post the sageprobe thing earlier this year
asciilifeform: in terms of the pc 'sow', imho a very promising item could be a handmade scheme in asm that fits in l0 cache. the 'nic question' (discussed in earlier thread) could be finessed in some grotesque way, for instance, consider using SLIP !
phf: seems like a very traditional thing to do though, sitting around talking about how everything went to shit since the ancestors went away
mircea_popescu: yes, it is. definitionally, pointing out that sow's ear makes for very poor silk when the decision to use something else is not on the table is called o-woe-ing.
mircea_popescu: can we set aside a day for the o-woe service and be done with it ?
asciilifeform: (even msdos is not fully understood today, and this despite the ~complete~ source leaking in 1998 !)
phf: only for the lack of trying, but even now elsewhere i'd be a regular trb guru :p
asciilifeform: there is a linux variant of this very thing, and yes, like a dog
phf: asciilifeform: i think bsd people like to compile their stack with various "i wrote this c compiler in a weekend" projects, like tcc
asciilifeform: compiler is ~the~ monoculture
trinque: at least people will not be doing things the same exact way, catch same exact diseases each time.
asciilifeform: now if the only usable c compiler weren't 100MB of ???????? !
trinque: leaving the sinful steps unspecified might be a decent strategy.
phf: alternatively "here's this 40 lines of asm forth implementation, and the rules by which you can translate it to x8664 assembly, we will use it to bootstrap proto-scheme, that will be ..."
phf: the bootstrap problem is not trivially solvable.
phf: mircea_popescu: oh i'm just talking about yesterday's thread. half those packages have binary blobs in them, some easily removable (like images that come with docs, etc.) some not so much (like internationalization PO files)
trinque: the stage1 tarball is a built gcc and whatever else is needed to rebuild itself entirely, then proceeds with that system to build the rest
trinque: if I decide to clean up a bum and put him to work, I am going to have to accept the risk that he burns my damn barn down.
mircea_popescu: or more generally - any reclaimed codebase the republic intends to clean up and use.
asciilifeform: phf: thread was about hypothetical 'vtronic gentoo'
phf: oh i guess the idea is to v-ify all those packages..
phf: we already have a method, which is a list of sha512 signed with a corresponding disclaimer. can do the same for any complicated project, like gentoo "here's the stage3, here's sigs for all the packages that you might possibly install"
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu's algorithm will be used, there is afaik no alternative possible.
asciilifeform: but their ~weight~ is not machine-calculable.
