GregoryNyssa: Good morning. That was an interesting discussion in the comment-thread with that Anonymous person. I wonder what sort of "highly integrated" operating system he is producing.
asciilifeform: welcome to #a, GregoryNyssa
asciilifeform: GregoryNyssa: i have no idea, fella never yet linked to his item.
GregoryNyssa: I recently read the two Game Engine Black Books by Fabien Sanglard. They were released for free on his website. The two books contain some good descriptions about how programmers worked back in the 1980s.
asciilifeform: GregoryNyssa: link plz ?
GregoryNyssa: The early PCs, despite their drawbacks, were much closer to the "fits in head" ideal.
asciilifeform: definitely
GregoryNyssa: One problem was, the VGA protocol was too convoluted for most programmers to handle.
asciilifeform: dunno, i never had any problem wrangling vga in asm
GregoryNyssa: Only a handful of programmers knew how to achieve fine-grained control over their own displays.
asciilifeform: ( recall 'unreal mode' etc ? )
GregoryNyssa: Nice to hear. I haven't written low-level VGA code before, but was hoping to give it a try sometime.
asciilifeform: probably trickiest part of doing this now is to unearth the vintage iron
GregoryNyssa: I reached adulthood around the time of Windows 8. Never had a chance to play with the older systems, sadly.
asciilifeform: fortunately ain't too late
GregoryNyssa: The Electronika BK which you mentioned on your blog seemed quite interesting.
asciilifeform: pdp11 clone in fact. in roughly 'sinclair' form factor.
asciilifeform: be aware that if you find one, will need pal-secam tv converter box
GregoryNyssa: I will keep that in mind.
asciilifeform: hm i defo had feeling that have seen the linked author before. turns out read his wolf3d chronicle.
asciilifeform: while on subj, this is interesting in light of my piece on subj. (nao if only could get a mobo w/ ecc ram in there somehow..)
GregoryNyssa: I will have a look at that article.
GregoryNyssa: This was indication that Fabien might write a third book detailing Quake III Arena.
GregoryNyssa: Now that would be highly useful. Even though the engine is dated, it is not exactly "retro."
GregoryNyssa: Games such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Urban Terror still have active online players.
GregoryNyssa: I just read both articles. The military probably has access to these.
asciilifeform: waiwat? these are commercial items, off-the-shelf
GregoryNyssa: I meant the workstation "filled with inert gas and welded shut."
asciilifeform: ah, these. in satellite industry, most likely.
asciilifeform: yer likely to get a i386 or similar tho.
